I am so sorry for your loss :aww That is so sweet how your hen tucked into your jacket like a baby. Dogs (any breed) just can't be trusted %100. We had such a sweet dog that wouldn't hurt a fly, and one day she was jogging with my brother and she darted into the bushes and brought back a squirrel

You never know. It is heartbreaking losing pets. Recently our Gracie dissapered and we looked EVERYWHERE for her. We thought she was taken by a hawk. It turns out she was hiding way way way up in the 50 ft trees. I still feel so guilty, because I had a feeling she might have been up there. So that night a possom or raccoon got her. I was even thinking of staying out there all night just incase she was up there and I should have.

I'm really impressed.

You took the high road. So many people just react out of anger in situations with neighbors.

That said, I do think they're obligated to replace your lost chickens. It's illegal to have a dog roaming at large in most places. One could argue that it's a risk keeping chickens b/c of predators. But it's also a risk owning a dog that could kill a neighbor's pets. They do have some onus of responsibility, especially since they knew the dog was getting off the chain. I have two dogs (who have a dog door leading to a fenced yard, with the fencing buried one foot in the ground in 3/4" gravel) and I'm prepared to pay the consequences if they ever cause trouble for a neighbor.

They're just lucky it wasn't me for a neighbor. One morning, I discovered a Malamute two thirds the way through the process of killing my flock of 12 turkeys. He just looked at me and then continued with his business. I didn't hesitate- went straight for the gun. I got in two shots- lucky for the dog I hadn't had my morning coffee, yet. It got away. Never saw it before and never saw it again.

She is a very reasonable person and I know she will pay for the losses. She may even get rid of the dog. It was a stray they took in who was found on the road and he keeps getting off his chain when they are at work.
Sorry for the loss of chickens. It is same song and dance again...dog owners who are the problem.

Keeping a dog CHAINED is not reasonable for the dog. It is cruel and there are laws cropping up all over to prevent this.
Please rehome the dog, if the owners can't leave it in a safe place when they are not home.
A dog is a companion animal, not a yard ornament.
A dog's place is in the home.
A dog that roams is a neglected, bored dog with out a relationship with its human. Happy dogs stay home .

My 12 year old mini poodle will take off up the road for our pond- which is a good piece away- to have a swim if she mistakenly slips out the door. Totally agree with this 100% so when she called me back yesterday we had a nice long talk and we agreed she could let her dog run in the A.M. And I could let my chickens run in the P.M. ;D She would keep her dog in the house that 4-5 hours that my chickens are out and that way HE is not chained up and I still get to let my chickens out. I was only letting them out for a few hours a night anyhow so it all worked out. She is also paying for all the losses plus some for the food we put into them. Everyone turned out happy with this one
