Respiratory Tea

3 tsp-Astragalus root
1 tsp lavender
2 tsp chamomile
2 tsp nettle
1 tsp peppermint
In a med saucepan bring 5 cups of water to a boil with the astragalus root, boil for 3 mins. Take it off the burner and add other herbs and cover. Let it sit 5-15 mins. The longer you let it sit the stronger it sits. It is important to cover the pot to keep the essential oils in. the oils hold the benefits of the herbs. Strain the mixture into a container. I fill a gallon waterer with the tea and serve warm ( not hot, just warm) They love it, I have had no problem with them drinking it. It is usualyy one before the plain water is. I serve this tea for 5-7 days. Rule of thumb I go by is to serve 3 days after the symptoms are gone.

Maidenwolf -

Which of these ingredients are solids (fresh or dried herbs) and which are essential oils?
Where is the best place to purchase them?
Thank you SO much for sharing your knowledge! This is fascinating to me (and to many others, I am sure)!

They are all dried herbs. You can use fresh if you grow it. I grow alot of herbs and dry them for later use. The things that I can not grow I purchase at an herbal shop near me. There are places on the web to purchase also but for me I want to see the product first to make sure it is fresh, yes I know "but its dried" Some retailers will keep an herb past its functioning life. After 6 months most dried herbs decrease in value as a medicine. Also the way it is processed will determine its value. Looking at a dried product the color should be close to the same as when it was alive. The older it is the "greyer" it will look. Unless it is an herb like mugwort which is supposed to look silvery.

Question about this respiratory tea--what symptoms would the chickens be having to use this remedy.( Also can people drink it?)

People sure can drink it. I use this when I am starting to get sick. The symptoms I look for before I pull this tea out are, Wheezing, sneezing, runny nose, congestion in chest.

Once my birds started coming down with a respiratory issue and their eyes were bubling and mucus was coming out of their eyes and noses, wheezing, gasping for air, sneezing, coughing, not eating. I made this tea and served it warm. The next day they were feeling better and eating their feed. I served it for 7 days

Infection fighter

2 tsp echinacea ( immune system boosting and attacks bacteria)
2 tsp goldenseal ( kills a wide range of bacteria and fungi)
1 tsp minced garlic( highly antimicrobial, fights bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites)
2 tsp licorice root ( anti inflammatory, eases cough and nurishes adrenal glands)
1 tsp marshmallow rt ( soothes inflamed mucus membranes, mildly stimulating for the immune sysytem)

These are all dried herbs. In a med pot, add 7 cups water and the echinacea, garlic, licorice, marshmallow. Simmer for 3-5 mins with cover on. Remove from heat and add goldenseal, return cover and let sit 5-10 mins. The longer it sits the stronger it gets. Sometimes I let it sit until it cools to room temp and then I can fill a gallon waterer half full and then add warm water. This way you can save some for later. Just keep it tightly covered in the fridge. ( any of these herbal teas are also great for us too)

Question: Would you use a different amount or percentage of the herb if it is fresh vs. using it dried? It's my understanding that the oils are more concentrated in the dried herb and you need to use more if using fresh.

Just wondering. Thanks!
