All-Purpose Sand?

Hi. I just got my first chickens last week. I've heard that ashes can be used to give them for dust baths. I was wondering if this meant exclusively wood ash or ashes from the bbq grill. I know that briquettes have some chemicals in them so I don't know if this would be safe.

I don't know how to fix a run, but my run has a 2 x 4 frame around the bottom and that is what keeps the sand in. The whole thing is on top of concrete.

patandchickens has good page on fixing a run with drainage problems as well as prevention for the future. Maybe there is some info there that might help.

No sand is not sand. There are different grades for different reasons. Play sand is fine siffited sand with no pebbles. When play sand becomes wet, it compacts into a hard lump. Construction sand has small pebbles and sand, this is better for drainage, which is the purpose of using the sand with the chickens.
But what about the silica in construction sand? For this reason I opted for play sand. Any concern?
