Alls I wanted was two or three chickens......

Who knew that a few birds would make me so crazy?? My neighbors have 3 hens and they seem normal LOL

I started out with 3...then one more....as it turned out....one I think is roo. So now I am thinking...I really wanted 4 hens, so maybe I should get another???

STEP AWAY FROM THE CHICKEN BIN!! JUST SAY NO!

I LOVE you guys

Remember ... if they have a name they don't count either.... so make sure you name them.
I told my son (who is 16)... that according to chicken math we don't have ANY

So I better get to the farm store and get me some....

i love chicken math! We wanted 3 and had to by 6 from TSC. then we knew to build a bigger building for future chickens but I stopped at a store to get more supplies and just had to get more chicks because we know have the room for it. we wanted 3, bought 6 and built for 14. we now have 14... hope we don't want more soon.

You all are killing me with chicken math. I only have 4 BOs. I want more too but no room in the coop or yard at current house for more. Just wait until we move..........I dream of lavender Orpingtons, Delewares, Welsummers and on and on. My husband just says wait until I can get you a different house in the country.

Mac that is one wonderful man you have! Willing to get you a place in the country so you can have more chickens! I think he's my new hero

Quote:
5 + 2 + 6 =13 potential chickens
22 acutal chickens
24 eggs, which always offset acutal and potential chickens therefore:

13+22 = 35 -24=11 total must always be divided by 2 leaving 5.5

fractions only count when adding small breeds when they can be added together to make one chicken and should be disregarded for our purposes here. Odd numbers are NEVER allowed and must be rounded down to the next even number

Grand total 4 actual chickens

I see no problem with more chickens

Haha! That is how it all starts. Next thing you know you have chickens in the coop - then the second coop - then the garage, spare bedroom, the bathroom, the kennel room at work. Then the incubator, and 7:30 am trips to the post office to pick up eggs and chicks. And a second incubator in case the first one breaks during incubation.

My theory is that keeping chickens will save the economy

I really wanted 12, wore my hubby down to at least go look with me at a feed store that sells only pullets. I gushed & he fell for it... allowing ONLY 4!!!

This store offered so many to choose from... it was hard but I chose a Barred Rock, a Golden Comet, an Americauna, & a RIR. It was tough to only get 4 but it turned out to be the best for us as I really only had the space to raise the 4 inside.
Spent more time researching & seeing what I was really getting myself in for (really wasn't expecting him to give in so easily!!). Discovered that adding new chicks to a flock is not easy but could be easier on us by keeping them close in age (quicker for a new one to catch up to the size of a 2month old than 5 month old was my logic) so I was able to convince DH to order me 6 more that I will be getting on Thursday!!

Yep... chicken math is going to catch up with you....
What are your new 6? and where did you get them?
The other thing... let me know how they arrive.
I have placed my first order with Cackle and they ship TODAY

always interested to see where others get theirs from and if they like the company.

My next 6 will be; 2 more Ameraucanas, 2 Black Australorps (I really wanted those the first time I was in but they were out), & 2 Black Jersey Giants. The BJGs were at the recommendation of the store owner who has 12 of her own. I wasn't going to get anything that big so I'm hoping I enjoy them & don't regret it in the long run.

I order mine from a feed store close to me (TC Country). They offer a huge variety, don't care how many I buy & sell only pullets unless you order a roo. They keep the chicks covered so no one is allowed to pick them up except the owner when she's grabbing the ones you pick out. Both the owner & her "main" worker both have chickens, are very knowledgable about them & are willing to help & encourage newbies like me
