I got home earlier than anticipated this afternoon and went out to let the ducks out in their outdoor run for what remained of daylight. They promptly ran off to the pond and I made the not so bright decision to let them be for the half hour or so they had left of light. They wandered up the hill and came back in the outdoor pen (gate open). I knew they had come back up but had a phone call to deal with and didn't go out right away. Next thing I hear a dog barking....Run outside in time to see the neighbor's new dog (they have two new puppies that like to wander) standing at the end of the duck pen (luckily the end that is fenced and closed) barking his fool head off at the ducks. And they are standing right up against the fence quacking their heads off at him. Guess it is lucky they didn't run toward the other end or he might have gotten in. Dog saw me and bolted - about that time his owner whistled for him. If he had gone another 30 feet the the other end of the pen, he would have had free access. And now he knows they are there....I lucked out this time. But am sure there will be a next, unless I keep them in their little pen (and it is too little - usually just the hens in their).
