I have 2 silkie hens about 6 months old that have been acting a little off, i know they have a little bit of a cold im treatimg them for but cold and all they have been out of their coop running my back yard and scratching around, eating drinking, they love their daily handful of meal worm i give them as a treat. Last couple days, 4 or 5 days to be more exact, they will come out for 5 minutes, peck around and go back into their coop, one of them kind lays on the ground with her rear elevated slightly, is this signs of her about to start laying? Ill try and get a picture of what she is doing in a little bit

Typically when chickens are about to lay an egg (especially the first couple times), common signs are "talking" loudly and more often, and going in and out of the coop trying to find a good place to lay an egg. From the sound of it it sounds like they are getting ready to lay! Keep us updated!

lol! I'm not saying they will be loud, but that is what my chickens do. It's kinda like "I'm about to lay an egg! Everyone need to know" type thing :)

As far as an uodate goes, im not sure if the hen thats acting like shes ready will make it through the night, my wife went out to check on them and some reason my dog attacked my silkie, no blood or anything but from what was described to me, she took a beating, ill update again when i get off work innthe morning and assess the damage

mine actually get noisy after they lay.. when they are calling for their flock.. but when they want to lay and someone is in their fave spot, its in and out and in and out.. i think your gal is getting ready.. spending more time in the coop.. :)

And also! I just picked up a one year old duck today, anyone could tell me how i can tell if its a drake or mallard, i believe its a pekin duck, ill post a picture of her/him in a little bit!
