Aloha,

My name is Jane and I am new to BYC. When we lived on 1/2 an acre of land on Kauai my sons raised many different types of chickens for many years. We moved back to Oahu ten years ago and we just picked up 3 gold star chicks and 3 Easter Eggers 2 weeks ago, and this is the first time I have become involved in raising chicks. They are too cute!

We have 3 American Bulldogs and so far so good. Does anyone out there have any tips on dogs and chicks?

Thanks!

Jane

My only tip is to keep them apart, sooner or later the chickens lose out and the dogs win.

My basis for this is - how many new members introduce themselves by saying their own dog decimated their flock. If it isn't that - then it's the neighbors dogs running loose that kill them.

Feral and domestic cats add to that number. I'm a dog lover and used to raise and show dogs - that never met a chicken.

Thanks Drumstick Diva!

I was worried about that...when we lived on Kauai our two labs were great with the chickens but we had a huge yard there. Now we have a small yard and AB's instead of labs.

What breed did you show?

Aloha,

Jane

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Good luck with your new chicks! There are quite a few threads on teaching dogs to be good with poultry, while a large part of it is a training issue, some dogs are never going to be reliably safe around them, especially if they already have a history of killing. Training methods need to be modified for the particular dog and situation. One of the nice threads. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/829562/training-teaching-a-dog-about-chickens We personally have four large GSD mixes that are running free with our chickens full time, they are really our main form of predator control and protection for the chickens.

Welcome to BYC!

X3 Keep the dogs separate from the birds. Nearly all dogs see chickens as dinner. Kelsie has left you with a great link on how to possibly train your dogs to behave around chickens. But keep in mind, not all dogs respond to this training.

Great to have you aboard and enjoy your new adventure!

Thank you Kelsie and TwoCrows for the warm welcome and the advice. The chicks are 2 weeks and all 3 dogs have been allowed near them with us right there. Luckily our male AB is protective of them and they follow him around our yard. It is obvious that our two females ABs are not to be trusted alone with them. Bam Bam is protected of all babies no matter what species but not so much when they grow up so I am so grateful for that training link! I thank you for sending it my way! Have a wonderful day! Aloha jane
