Aloha from Hawaii

G’Day from down under [the other big island :p] BuffieMama :frow Welcome!

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

We are on the big island too. We have a big former dog yard 30x40 I think with 6 foot chain link fence which was reinforced with chicken wire around the bottom 2-3 feet. We trimmed their one wing to avoid flight but they are heavy birds so that doesn’t seem to be a problem so far. Where on the big island are you located?

I'm in Hilo so limited to what I dare to keep ;) no Roos for sure :hmm :welcome Enjoy the website, BYC Members are the greatest! Experienced, helpful, informative & all over the World. Wish the Admin would make it a preference to listing members location :pop

:welcome Which Island are you on? I'm on the Big Island, there's a BYC Hawaii too. I'm thankful our predators aren't as abundant as in the Mainland. Are yours confined or do you free range? Watch for the hawks, wild pigs, loose dogs, feral cats besides the mongoose & rats/mice, your dogs.
Ww would love to have them run free, but so would our dogs. We have 6 1/2 acres of well fenced property off Pohoiki Road so loose dogs, feral cats and pigs haven't been a problem. I clipped their wing, one, so flying is not an option. Right now our biggest problem for us, (not the chickens), is a huge rat infestation. All the neighbors, except the ones that have cats, are facing the same problem. They specialize in destroying all the wiring in our vehicles including making a nest in the air conditioning unit of our truck. We are trying everything known to man to get rid of them. Can't put out poison as the eo' nest in our area, plus I don't think it's a good idea generally.
Where on the Big Island are you?
