I have never had chickens before (ducks, geese, sheep, goats, cats, rabbits, but never chickens). Better late than never, hey. Just built a "Garden Ark" chicken tractor with a few modifications. Had fun figuring out watering and feeding systems. As soon as it was complete we got 6 chicks that were about 10-14 days old from the local feed store. The tag on the cage said Rhode Island Reds, but one of them looks as if it could be related to a hawk, dark legs (blueish), and larger than the rest. We will see when he/she grows older. I will attach a link to a little you tube i made of the coop and chicks. The feed store guy said that they had a 95% chance of being female. I found backyard chickens looking for ways to tell cockerels from pullets (I learned some vocab along the way).
My wife and I live in Hilo, HI which is a perfect climate for chickens. We don't have to worry about winters. Our only predators are mongooses and our native Hawaiian hawk. We love to just watch them and see their individual personalities emerge. Since most everything feed wise has to be shipped in, we are interested in learning how to eventually grow our own feed for the chickens. We also love to garden and hike.
