Aloha Ya'll

Alternatively you can fence in an area for the chickens to roam in by nailing corrugated sheets onto posts like this with chicken wire above that. I kept my chicks and youngsters in this pen, of which you can see the corner here (sorry I don't have any proper pics of it) and that proved very effective in keeping mongoose out.

Luckychick105, thank you... We had a whole list of really old names that fell out of favor, well, basically because they are horrible. We wanted something you just don't hear much anymore. I had a wild chicken adopt us when we first moved here and for some reason I felt her name was Susan. So when we started thinking of getting our own flock, I thought Susan would like a Steve rooster. We happen have 3 Steve's working with us, so that changed my mind LOL and where the idea of uncommon old names came from.

However, when my son came to visit is when we picked up our first babies and he feel in love with one of the chicks that he claimed as his own, so he named her Bellatrix from Harry Potter (she was a black chick and I guess Bellatrix reminds him of darkness). I liked the name since it also sounds old and named her litter mate Minerva to match. My son then picked out a noisy rambunctious chick as his fiances baby because he said it was annoying like her LOL! She loved the idea and named hers Beaker. We then knew we had to wait a few weeks to name the rest until our daughter and her boyfriend visited to pick babies for themselves. Her boyfriend is a chemist and instead of Beaker being a member of the Muppets, he thought about an actual glass beaker and named his chick Bunsen. (we got lucky that was the chick that turned out to be the surprise rooster!). Our daughter named her chick Valerie Chickens after the boyfriends sister because that is what their family calls her. Since we waited to name the others we had started calling Beaker's twin "Not the Beaker" until she got a name... and it stuck. Then Nine happened to be the ninth baby I wrote down on my charts and if you can't tell, I am a dork and love sci-fi. 7of9 from StarTrek Voyager was a favorite of mine, so it is a play on that name. Plus 9 is my husbands favorite number and she was also named for him. Then we were able to name the remaining babies from our old grandma list. We have many many more to go if we keep growing our flock. :)

People that work for us thought I was crazy for naming all of them and impressed I could look out over the yard and know their names. Now, they have also gotten attached and know all of their names as well hahahahaha!
