Just got 3 new Rhode Island Red pullets and love them already! Trying to raise our own eggs for the first time. I love the way they "talk" to me when I bring them vegetables to nibble on or a few pieces of broken up bread. Had an abandoned 5 gallon bucket of weeds next to the coop and found out they liked those, too! This is going to be awesome!

Yes, chickens are so much fun! And it gets even better the longer you keep them. Work with them too, on their level on the ground to friendly them up and soon they will be climbing all over your lap, and begging to sit there with you!

Great to have you aboard and enjoy your new flock!

Thanks to all of you for the warm welcome! I think I created a monster, though. Now when I see ads for chicks, pullets, and the like, I want to go buy them! My poor husband just doesn't know what he's done. We have a large garden every spring and fall. We've already planted the red potatoes, black eye peas, crowder peas, and acre peas, and he'll be planting squash, zucchini, corn, green beans, tomatos, peanuts, etc. I was glad to learn that their feces makes good fertilizer for our garden and that I can feed them the "overgrown" squash and zucchini as a treat. Already found out that they love maters! I just don't know when they will start laying eggs. Keep checking, had them about 3-4 weeks now, but nothing yet. They are supposed to be about 10 months old.
 
That is called chicken math! When you plan on 2 + 2 chickens and it winds to = 6 or 8 or 27 .....
Sounds like your chickens are going to well fed, not sure if you have seen it, but there is a nice chicken treat chart in the Learning Center, https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/chicken-treat-chart-the-best-treats-for-backyard-chickens there are a few things you should avoid at the end, but really chickens can eat about anything you can.
Do you know if they were laying before you got them? 10 month old RIR would normally be laying, you should see the combs and wattles starting to get a bright red, and they may start "squatting" for you, kind of crouching down in front of you. If you can, you could post pictures, people may be able to give you an idea of how far off those eggs are... you are sure they are not hiding eggs somewhere?
 
Thanks for the advice on the link! My mom lives with me and she is 77 years old and has limited mental capacity, plus SEVERE osteoporosis. She has fallen and broken both of her shoulders, one right behind the other, so I haven't been able to visit the sight until now. I am VERY HAPPY to report that on May 6, 2014 my husband brought me the first egg and another the next day. I pulled the third one out of the nest myself this very morning! I'm so tickled I can't stand it!!! OH, and they are beautiful, too! Perfectly oval with beautiful coloring like wet beach sand. He said the one with the red wattle was the layer, so you are absolutely right. It's the biggest one, too. The other two don't have wattles, yet. Thing is, the two smaller ones were purchased first, but we were told the bigger one was younger when we bought it. SOMEBODY LIED!! Oh well, I don't care, I'm just happy I'm getting eggs. I'm concerned about one of them, though. It seems so much smaller that the other two, and I think it's being targeted by them. It's come up with missing feathers a few times and I see them in their yard. I hope not! I can't stand a bully. I think I was just over anxious about the eggs. I have to let them grow up first (the two smaller ones with no wattles yet). The **** mice got into my scratch corn, so I had to put it inside a container that's also inside of a sturdy plastic tote. We're learning as we go along...we'll get it. Thanks again for the advice!!
