Alright, sevin dust appears to actually work AND not kill the chickies

I don't use sevin dust anymore. I used it at one time. It is a carcinogen. Just because you don't see its effects now doesn't mean you might not see it down the road. Cancer is not something a person or an animal gets immediately after exposure to a cancer-causing agent. I recently had an older hen to die. I sent her to a State lab, and it was ovarian cancer that killed her. Only a lab could have diagnosed this; otherwise I would not have known. I have no way of knowing what caused the cancer but the sevin dust I once used COULD be the culprit (as well as other things). She was a hen I had when I used sevin regularly. Sevin Dust kills honeybees and other beneficial insects, such as Ladybugs, Green Lacewings. etc.

DE kills honeybees but I found it ineffective against the bad bugs. I stopped using it a long time ago.

Rotenone dust has actually been shown to cause Parkinsons Disease. There are at least two prominent studies showing this relationship. It was once approved in organic farming so I guess, one cannot assume anything. I've used it as well in the past.

I have pest control spray my house every 3 months. They are supposed to be using organics but who knows? I no longer let them spray ANYTHING outside my home. I never let them spray near the run but some time ago, I stopped all the outside spraying. I cannot say the same thing for my neighbors.

Whatever you use, sevin dust or other pesticides, please only use it thoughtfully and as a last resort & only when you really need to use it. We have enough pesticides and chemicals out there now, all which are going to be with us awhile.

I'm in the UK and have just ordered Sevin Dust from Amazon. Hoping it will be here tomorrow , my girls are itchin' and scratchin! So uncomfortable! Lice are evil little Buggers! Really grateful for all the tips! So glad I joined this Site!

Well, I couldn't wait for the Sevin dust to arrive! Apparently it comes from the US? Why we don't do it here I will never know or maybe it comes under a different name? My Chooks were going downhill fast, the louse powder I had been using wasn't touching anything! I came back on here last night and saw that "Frontline" was an option! I had some stored for my Labs. I was hesitant to put it on the birds but, thought if it can be used on 2 day old puppies how can it harm a Chicken? I made the decision that something had to be done.....I was losing my girls, they were so poorly and infested with lice and fleas! I emptied a pipette of Frontline into an egg cup and with a cotton bud dabbed the back of the neck, under each wing and a dab under the vent, making sure it went directly to the skin. I left the girls and returned 4 hours later. It was amazing how they had perked up! They were almost back to normal! Still lots of " grooming" going on but when I looked under the feathers..... A shed load of dead and almost dead parasites! I am so relieved and happy that I treated them this morning! Honestly anyone who has this problem with their flock, go for Frontline! It is an almost instant result. Tonight the girls are strutting their stuff, scratching and eating for England! No side effects to Happy Happy Hens again!
Thanks to all on here for the tips, advice Etc, so glad I found this site!

i bought Sevin dust 5 the other day and went to start using it on coop, perches, etc. but warning label says NOT to come in direct contact with it,. But it sounds as though people r putting it directly on their chickens, roosts, etcetera. Is that okay? I'm trying to get rid of mites.

Sevin is highly toxic to honeybees. I am not sure if DE is, but I am very sparing with its use outdoors just in case.
Yes, I’m in the same boat-no Sevin cuz of my honey bees and ducks, only a little DE. But that’s still not keeping the mites down and we found some on our day old Silkie chick, so we are using the chicken mite spray you get at feed stores. If that doesn’t work I’ll try the Apple cider vinegar bath. I’m not going to lose any more chicks to these damn mites!

I love Sevin dust. I used it when I had a lice infestion with my chickens. Got rid of every last one of them when I did it twice for two weeks. I now do it once before winter starts and right after spring starts. Haven't had any issues with lice or mites since I've been doing it. We're very careful to only put it in the common spots for the bugs to appear. I also put DE in their sand and all over the coop through Spring - Winter

Sevin is a poison that will not degrade. I wouldn’t put it near my chickens or the ground they food from.

I bathe my chickens after I do that and change the coop. But I am aware it is not for everyone to use on their own chickens nor is it a type of dust some people are comfortable using.
