Alternate way of determining sex of your chick

There is an old wives tale that you can determine the sex of an unborn child by dangling a pencil with a needle and thread over the wrist of pregnant woman. I know of this because I used it to determine the sex of my children and have used it many many more times on others. So I decided to try it to see how well it would work for determining the sex of little chicks and so far have had amazing success. I have had a lot of people that come to buy chicks and I often give a one more time pencil test just to make sure I get a repeat result that it is a pullet and I can tell they think I am loony but I finally had a lady that knew exactly what I was doing and said that that is how she determined the sex of her last two children. So at risk of several of you assuming I am a nut I am copying the instructions from E-how and modifying it for what I do for chicks.

Sharpen a number two lead pencil (I use a shorter pencil). Make sure that it is sharp so you can observe any movement.
  • Thread a piece of sewing thread though a needle. The size of the thread is not important, just
so it is long enough to dangle the pencil over the chick.
    • Stick the tip of the needle into the top of the pencil eraser. The needle should be stuck in enough so that when you hold the pencil by the thread, it will not fall out. The sharpened point of the pencil should be facing downward.

    • Place chick in your hand, I hold it up to my stomach, with its little head and neck showing. I do hold it semi tight so it doesn't jump out of my hand. Ensure you are away from any wind or breeze.
    • Pick up the pencil by the string and dangle it so the tip of the pencil is just over the chicks head, making sure that your hand is very still. I tend have my elbow, that is holding the pencil, tucked up close against my ribs rather than suspended in air because you can influence the movement of the pencil with just minimal movement.
    • Observe the pencil, as it should begin to move. If the pencil moves in a straight line you have a cockerel. If the pencil moves in a circle, you have a pullet. If you think you have possible influenced the pencil and want to start over just stop the pencil and start over again.

I don't expect that everyone would be comfortable with this system so try doing some tests and mark the chicks with leg bands and wait and see. This is what I did in the beginning. Also if you want instant confirmation do this on an older chick that you already know is a pullet or cockerel you just need to get them to hold fairly still.

One more note: I can assume this will work if you are a man, and not understanding what really causes the pencil to move one way or another but I, being a female, have had success. If anyone has success with this it would be fun to know.

OH MY GOSH!!! It works! I tested it on a Cochin roo, straight line. Then a hen, circle. Then another roo, straight line. Then a roo in question, straight line. Hen in question, circle. Definate hen, circle. On me a circle and my brother a straight line. My mother - circle, grandfather - straight line, grandmother - circle. It's so crazy! How could it work?! So I used it on my baby ducks. I have 2 drakes and 2 hens! I have eggs in the incubator 10 days from hatching, and on my Silkie egg, it said girl. The next one girl, and the next a boy. (I didn't test all of the eggs) This is so amazing! I did it on my male Chihuahua, straight line and my sister's male cat, straight line. AGH! Why does this work? 100% accurate. I will recommend this to everyone. The pencil is going with me when I go to look at possible additions to my flock.

Silly hatcheries still mucking around with that unnecessarily complicated vent sexing............

It's just something fun to mess around with and see what it says. I've been sitting here for a while trying to see if I can find a flaw with it. I'm still not sure I believe it works but it's been right so far. When the ducks get older I'll know how accurate it was with them. I wouldn't depend on it if I was selling sexed chicks to people. I'd rather know for myself than trusting a pencil.

I am glad to see that some of you are experiencing what I have. I have had some misses with this, and I have paid more attention to what I am doing and noticed that if I do too many in a row I tend to get a little impatient and maybe a little arm fatigue, it is so easy to influence the direction of the pencil with the slightest movement, and I quit before letting the pencil completely reveal its direction, i.e., starts in a oval and I see it as a circle and but it straightens out if a just wait a little longer.

I think the hatcheries have a quick method of vent sexing but as I am doing bantams I hear that it is much more difficult. What is the most fun is when a chick that hatches and it is a special one, maybe a new breed or new blood line, and you just don't want to wait for weeks to see what it is going to be you can do this test and have an almost instant idea of what you ended up with.

Additionally, I have found that you can use more than just a pencil. I have a button that looks like a small flying saucer, I have used a very small fishing lead weight, I have been told about someone using a key. I do know that I tried this with just suspending the pencil from an en-adamant object, thumb tacked the string to the top of a cabinet, and put the chick under it and it didn't work at all.

Have fun.

Unfortunately a rigorous study would show 50% success rate of this method. I have even heard of people using this on developing eggs which would be the easiest way to demonstrate effectiveness. Set 50 sex linked chicken eggs, use the string/pencil/ring/whatever else you can dangle from a string and separate out the eggs based on your results. My prediction is about 50% +\- 5% success at accurate prediction.

I've quit using this method. It's pretty accurate given it is just a pencil. It's been wrong quite a few times but we used it for fun just to get some idea of what we've got.
