Hemp hulls? Is it cheap. I like all the suggestions but with hatching hundreds of chick every week or two the other suggestions are going to be expensive!

Good morning,
I'm tired of using pine shavings in the brooder. I'm wondering what other people are using in their brooders other than shavings. I'd really like to find something different!
Thanks, Sonja

I just use the bedding that's in my coop, as that's where I brood the chicks. It's a mixture of leaves, straw, pine needles, hay, wood chips, shavings, twigs, etc. Nice and deep, no cleaning necessary as their digging through it will bury their little poops each day.

I can't remember what I paid at the moment, but it was more than pine shavings n other types. I liked it bc it is a grass, not a tree, so it is a renewable resource, it's something they can eat n it won't hurt them bc it has no oils in it like wood,, and it's much better/more quickly composted.
I suppose the fact that you are raising so many,, cost containment is paramount. For me, I have just a few, and am doing some backyard gardening, so cost wasn't the deciding factor. I will get the name of the company and $ n get back to you, tho, just in case you want to try it once n see how you like it.

Hey, well we have to raise a lot just for ourselves for meat and for eggs! We have 13 soon to be 14 children and our in a homesteading lifestyle and like to eat organic and GMO frees and on pasture. So in order to afford that we need to do it ourselves. Plus working with the land and animals gives so many Life lessons and growth and pictures that truly touch the heart and at times sometimes seems more so grieves the heart!

In doing so many we also decided to add it to our adventure and hatch and sell chicks! It is rewarding to be able to deliver chicks to people on acreages who realize they want true quality real regs for eating plus they want to have fun with pretty enjoyable different birds. If we can bring joy plus provide something that truly gives life, is is wonderful!
