Hello! Doing it a little different in the brooder here.
Presently, I spend all my free time now on thinking about brooders and coops.
We have 6 chicks that are now 11 days old. 5 Orpingtons and 1 Easter Egger.
I first thought I'd get a Ecoglow, then I opted for a red light, then I didn't want them under a light at night (and it was too hot) so I started the first night tucking them into to bed with towels and two new feather dusters with a top cloth. Now I am stuck on that method and they are comfy warm in the morning when I get them out and turn their little light on. They are doing well and not huddling too much around the light in the day.
The red light was too hot for them so I changed that out to a 45watt regular bulb lower down. They are doing great with no heat at night but they are in our house that is about 60 at night too.
They will soon outgrow their nest box (and move down into the daylight basement which is not heated) and I am thinking about making a self-serve nesting box using tube lighting (covered up just as a heat source)with the dusters or a heat matt over a cookie rack raised up.
In a few weeks I go out of town and my son is not going to be able to "put them to bed" like I do so they need a change.
Do you think the Ecoglow is any safer (as in fire hazard) than using tube lights or a heating pad? We use tube lighting under our seeds to warm up the soil so they’ll grow in the winter. … that’s how I came with that idea.
And someone mentioned an EcoGlow comparable product that was a lot cheaper. Can anyone tell me what that brand was?
