I had a couple of old english game hens when I was a kid. I have wanted to get some as an adult, but either lacked time or the desire to commit. I know there are many predators around too and didn't know how to deal with that. Recently someone had to leave their chickens behind and I was the one that benefited by getting the sweetest 6 hens-Buff Orpington, Barred Rock, an olive and Easter eggers- and their coop, run and supplies.

I love watching these girls. They make me smile and laugh. They also have helped to fill the void that was left when my senior dog passed. (He required so much attention and extra help during his last year.) I now have these girls, one being a cross-beak. That I give more attention than they need.

I don't have many hobbies. I like to spend time with family. Right now, I need to spend time catching up on things I have been putting off and maybe pick up some hobbies.

I feel like I knew about backyard chickens a long time ago in book form? I dunno. It felt familiar when I started reading the posts though. I decided to join when I couldn't find any posts that had the answer I wanted. I have been able to find answers to almost every question though.

Welcome to BYC! What good fortune - it sounds like you have a lovely flock. ^^ What kind of hobbies were you interested in?
Not sure on the hobbies. I have a small garden in the summer and I will can and freeze what we don't eat. I plan to teach myself a little guitar, read some books and do some kind of writing, but I rarely get around to those plans.

I've found when trying to establish hobbies it's best to actually schedule an alarm or something on your phone and dedicate 15 minutes to start with for whatever it is you're attempting to do, and to do that daily or every other day if you can. :D
It's especially helpful if you try and tie your hobbies in with things you need for practical reasons - like reading chicken/gardening books! XD
