We have one RSL that laid her first egg on 6/24. Since then almost all of her eggs have been double yolk.. she gives us about 4-5 eggs a week and so far she has only given us 2 single yolk eggs. Huge eggs! They are both normal jumbo sized yolks even.

Is this going to shorten her laying life or put her health in danger? Not that there is anything that I can do about it, but I'd like to know if I should watch her more closely than the rest.

Hi
Laying double yolkers does not affect the health or laying life of your chicken. Usually, when chickens start laying they dont lay normal eggs. Some lay double yolkers and some no yolkers. This just is a sign that their reproductive system is starting to work. Don't be worried if this does not stop, but it probably will as the hen gets older. In the mean time I hope you like yolks! I hope this helps :)

Thanks. I'd heard that double yolks were common in the early days of laying. I was just surprised to see that after a little over a month she is still laying doubles! We are fortunate though, all of hens (8 total) have laid perfect eggs since day one... not one deformity or odd ball egg yet!

Thanks for the info!
