I'm Melanie, and I've always wanted chickens. Recently, it became legal to have backyard chickens in our town, so I prepared for almost a year. I read everything I could, watched tons of great Youtube videos, prepared my yard, got my supplies, and built a coop with my eldest daughter. We are permitted 3 hens, and we chose

1 Buff Orpington chick ( Named Ginger)

1 Barred Rock chick ( Named Bunty)

1 Black Australorp chick (Named Blackymac)

from a reputable place. We chose those breeds for calm temperament and being good layers. They are about 5 weeks old now. Two are great. The third, well... I'm posting about that! Anyway, I looked around the net for info and found this site. I was impressed!

I'm a widow with three daughters living with me in a small tract home in the suburbs in Northern California. I write novels (two published, not that anybody reads them much) , I make dolls using various mediums, I crochet passibly, and I work in Photoshop. I'm also getting into organic gardening, partially to benefit the chickens. As for other critters, we rescued 4 feral kittens in the back yard when the mom cat failed to return. Somehow we never got around to adopting them out, and they are now neutered indoor house panthers named Frodo, Maltese Falcon, Severus, and Loki. My kids are nerdy.

Nice to meet you all.

I am very excited that you are now allowed to have the 3 hens. I have wanted chickens for about 3 -4 years and I finally got some this spring too. Still figuring it all out myself.

Very nice to meet you Melanie- glad it's legal for you to have chickens. It's no fun when someone has to hide them and fear the knock at the door. Welcome to Backyard chickens, hope you enjoy it as much as we do. You chose three great breeds. I'm sure you will be very pleased with them.

Welcome to BYC, Melanie. Glad you decided to join our flock, and I'm glad you were legal to get some chickens. I love your chickens' names. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. Our children and granddaughter loved our chickens and made lap pets of the calmer and more gentle breeds. Based on your criteria, you made some very good breed choices. Barred Rocks are generally docile, and Buff Orpingtons and Black Australorps are very calm and gentle (regular lap pets).) In addition all three of your breeds are good layers with the Black Australorps being exceptional layers. We are currently caring for 4 feral kittens (all male Siamese) as well which were abandoned by the mother when construction began at a local school. My daughter named them after Star Trek Captains and First Officers. We have Kirk, Picard, Spock, and Riker. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your three hens and four feral cats.

Thanks! I'm happy to finally get to be "The Crazy Chicken Lady" of the neighborhood.

Thanks for the warm welcome! I've known several Siamese cats in my life, each one being a real character! Love the names too! I guess you will appreciate that we named our eldest daughter Amanda after Spock's mother.

Looking forward to learning a lot here and making some friends who appreciate chickens.
