This has turned into quite an interesting thread! So many people are weighing-in on both sides. I'll bet that it's either male or female.

I considered getting a BO, but I decided on a Rhode Island Red instead. I think I'll probably get at least a couple BO's next year.

BO's are very sweet and pretty. The only problem I have with them is the more aggressive/active chickens pick on them alot. To get more food in them I have a feeder in their run so they can escape from the other bossy hens.

Hi, I posted these pics on both your threads! I had mentioned that"he" looks just like my hens, so I am attaching pictures of one of my two buffs. This is my first time uplading from photobucket so bear with me!

They're not the best pics of her comb but you can get an idea that she -and my reds- for that matter have a large comb like yours and the tail feathers are similar. Oh, and they are definatley hens!!!

Judging by the last pics that you posted, I would say its definitely a pullet! She is very large and has a nice big comb, but thats completely normal in those type of birds. BO's are big, hardy, meaty birds. Thats why theyre such good egg layers.

I would have to agree I think she is a pullet...I have 7 Buff Orpington pullets and 2 look JUST like that and the other 5 aren't red yet. The ones that are red are slightly more filled out than the others. I wouldn't worry too much....I thought mine were roo's too until I learned that they get red when they are ready to lay!!

I have a buff orp that looked just like that at **seven** weeks. I most certainly have a rooster. However, it's not just his looks -- his behavior is very protective and dominant. Not aggressive (yet), but if you have a rooster his behavior should give some clues.

A friend of mine grew up on a chicken farm and claims that the best way to tell is by behavior -- less scratching, more looking around for danger.

This one didn't even start to get red until about 14 weeks or so. And, it seemed to turn red like like overnight... (ok... a couple of days) but it was quick.

The behavior is the same as all the rest. No difference.

They are going to be 17 weeks this weekend and no crowing or eggs! I guess only time will tell!!!

I am going with pullet and she will certainly be your first egg layer. Here is a pic of my 20 wk old cockerel and he has had his rooster feathering since at least 15 weeks and a very upright stance. Your girl doesn't look anything like a cockerel to me.

I use this rule.. if you wanna sex your buff orps, do so between 5-8 wks. After that, girls start to confuse you based on comb development. Only feather growth and body structure are the true signs as they mature into a layer or rooster.
