OK, I have 8 chicks and I am hoping

for a rooster somewhere in the mix. There are 2 that are in question:

#1 is a Mystery chick...the owner said the possibilities are an Ameraucana hen X Barred Rock, Black SxLink or a Speckled Sussex roo (she seemed pretty certain of the hen). "She" has a single comb, has yellow legs, and chipmunk stripes. She has no muffs/beard & no greenish legs. Her comb seems to be turning more pink than the other chicks (yes, I realize they are different breeds). Opinions on breed would be helpful as well.

#2 is a Barred Rock…and she looks like one. My eyes are seeing a bit of red in her comb. Hubby picked this one & is hoping for some crowing

Even though I have been around chickens my entire life, I am a new chicken keeper...so my eyes are not the best judges. I'm counting on you "Chicken Crazies" to help me out!

It's very early to tell, but I would say both roosters, there combs are very big, from my experience, but then again, some hens have big combs, okay, so what I would do is check the feathers on their back, if its pointy, its a boy

If its curved its a girl

Pretty sure you got both roos there. The first one has a big pink comb and the second one has a big comb and an irregular white splotch on it's head which points to cockerel.

ETA: Edited to change my answer because I just saw the white splotch on the back of the Barred Rocks head.

i say def both roos the combs are too big & pink for pullets. but then the BR doesnt have wattles coming in so it could be a pullet

To my inexperienced eye, your mystery chick looks like a game chicken roo to me - I have a BBRed or OEGB that's about 4 weeks old & has a small comb (although this could be due to a mix) and your 2nd chick looks like a girl.

I agree, both are roos.

The BR I'm most certain about due to the coloring - more white than black is what signifies a roo. The other's comb is really quite red for its age, but you never know!

Thanks so much! I don't believe the owner had any game hens in her yard. Is that something that's just in the ancestry & pops up once in awhile?

The lady seemed pretty certain that it was an Ameracaunca hen X Barred Rock. Speckled Sussex, or Black SxL.

I think they're both roos. That BR spot on the head is very irregular, which points to a roo. Glad you want roos!!
