my chicks are weenies too.... they are 8 weeks. I turn off the lamp during the day but I still find them late afternoon huddled (all ten in a lump) inside the coop. Since they are such wimps late afternoon, and our temps at night have been low 40's I've been turning the lamp on at night. This is southern Cal ... the afternoons are NOT that cold! I will start shortening the length of time I leave the lamp on at night shortly.
I just can't believe I read about all these chickens in snow areas being just fine and my wimps are huddled in daylight hours with temps in the low 60s!
Guess my chicks are typical Southern Californians .... a little bit of coolness and we jump to thinkin it's 'frigid' weather. Pathetic
