I paid 5 bucks a pop for 11 silkies (seller threw in a few extras too) they do have better feathering than hatchey quality. Also these are the colors I wanted. Well worth my money. I would do it again and again and again I love them all.
When picking them out just look for black skin, feet and beaks. I would also check to see how well the toes are feathered and the spacing. I am almost certain the puffy cheeks are bearded siklies and vaulted skull (you and see very well on my smallest black chick) will have larger crest. Make sure all are active and no pasty butt like others have suggested. I am not expert but I have been doing a lot of reading post and googling. BTW my Silkies are very docile thus far. I have a feeling you will love them.
Good Luck!

These are my younger EE's about three days old the second one on the right is my Fav! Not too sure about the other black one though. seems to be missing a few feathers on his back but otherwise ok 3 are rumpless

These are my older EE's, two weeks old, i know its early to tell but im guessing the one in the front is a roo. His comb is way bigger than the others already. He is rumpless

All seem healthy. The guy was reputable, it turns out he is the guy who cares for the water fowl at the magnetic hill Zoo here in Moncton.
So we were treated to seeing all the birds they normally have out in the summer because they were in his care. So what he does is hatch his birds at the zoo for the kids to see in the bator and then take them home.
I got to see the parents and they looked good. it was clean in there.

I paid a private person $5 per chick for silkies. I would consider $10 if the parents were of good stock. But, as has been said before, its a crap shoot whether or not you get show quality birds. I'm glad it turned out well for you.

$10 dollars is a joke and $5 isn't a "deal", sorry. I did pay more for mine because they were sexed and shipped in small numbers with a heating pad, but still not that much.

Short for Easter Eggers. They lay blue, green, pink and sometimes brown. I have several EE's. Each also has a different feathering and feather color. They are a friendly and interesting birds. Here's a link that tells a little about them http://www.eastereggers.com/

$10.00 a chick to me seems way to high. I have been selling mine at $3.00 for chicks a week old. I sell my 3-4 month olds for about $7.00 and I believe my girls are nice lookers.
