Am I being stupid?

I bought 10 bourbon reds... made early arrangements to get buyers. Had people arranged to take 8, and leave me with 2. One guy backed out... and I already delivered 2 to a nice lady.. so I had 8, and then one died

then I had 7... the other guy was supposed to call me and arrange pick-up for his 3 today (nobody pre-paid) but he didn't... plus, one of my turkeys is foggy eyed.. I think it's not infected.. I'm pretty sure it's just congenital, or pecking related.. because although one died, the other one seems fine, just blind on the left...the first one died quick, and this one really seems fine.. anyway, I can't sell the blind one.. so I was looking through the group today, trying to pick out which one's I'd sell the guy, and being a little annoyed that I brooded them for him for 4 days, and am not making any profit off them.... ($10 in, $10 out... plus feed...)... so actually losing money on them... and I can't pick out my 3 least favorite.. I kind of like them all... but I really wasn't planning on 7 turkeys.. but I don't want to part with them... and now i'm trying to not think about eating them..... do I owe this guy these turkeys? Am i being stupid? Both? What do you think?

So are you saying you want to keep what you have left? If he doesn't call you today and you want to keep them, then I would say sorry you never called me and now I'm keeping them.

I want to keep them all... but I'm starting to have second thoughts about eating them... but I can't afford to KEEP 2 turkeys overwinter, certainly not 7... and I promised 3 to this guy, but he's apparently flaked.. and I'm all in a tizzy. Plus, I need to rethink my housing.. instead of 2, if I let this guy take 3, I'll still have 4.. and my housing will need to be doubled... they are so CUTE!

I bet there's a pretty good chance you won't hear from him. If I'm reading it right, you were going to get 2, the lady who followed thru got 2, this guy who didn't call today was going to get 3 and the person who backed out would have 3, right? So worst case scenario is he calls and you sell him 3 (and I might charge him extra for feeding them for days since he's late) and you still have 4 to keep. Best case he never calls and you 7. Both cases leave you better off than you were with your original plan, which would have left you with only 2. I think you're in a win-win, honestly. If you really want to keep them all, don't remind that guy that he was supposed to come get them already.

If you don't have the means to keep them do the responsible thing and get rid of them. Either put all 7 in your freezer come fall or post a craigslist ad and get rid of them. If you do not think you will be able to have the 2 you originally planned for butchered when they are of appropriate size include those in your ad now, no sense wasting your time and money feeding them up for someone else.

How old are these guys? are they sexed? I dont know much about turkeys but I have afew friends who raise them for pets-they never eat anything they raise-NEVER! where are you in VT?

If you are really likely to get that attached to your turkeys, can't stand the thought of eating any of them and can't afford to keep that many anyhow rehome as many as you can as quick as you can to avoid grief. Just keep a couple as pets. Main negative with that plan is the small chance that you will end up with 2 toms. Any other gender combination works better.
