Am I being stupid?

My sort-of-plan was to raise whatever I couldn't sell, and then take them to the mobile unit... then sell whatever my family couldn't eat.. like we could probably eat one fresh turkey (butchering is scheduled for Nov 23) for T day, and then freeze one to eat when DH comes home from afghanistan... If I had 3, I could probably get my brother to pay something for one.. Organic, free range, happy.... but 7? jeez... and I am really hoping they get ugly and gross soon.. they are like little bird-unicorns.... super adorable, and dumb! Sitting on each other, biting toes, staring eye to eye... sleeping in a heap... stretching! So... worst case, I end up with 7, and can't kill any of them... and am in a pickle... and DH comes back to 7 giant uneatable turkeys... best case scenario... however many birds I end up with, I remorselessly (is that even a word?) send them all into the truck, no looking back, and my family gets the birds we want, and maybe sell some and break even... but I don't know which way it will turn out! I've never, ever killed anything, or even sent anything to it's death....

Well I guess for me most of your answers are built in. It was my money that bought them, it was my time, feed water, equipment and effort that has cared for them. I was the one that went to the trouble of ordering them, receiving them and caring for them. All of that adds up to they are mine and I don't have to be willing to give them up. I also take my word seriously. I also hold others to their word. and that means to the word of their word. today means today not when you finally get around to it. Deals off when it was not kept.
Oh by the way. If I am going to do all the work to get a group turkeys, they will get the pick of what is left after I am done.

but... i can't pawn the blind one off on anyone else... right? I appreciate your'alls feedback. I'm going to deal with the guy if/when he calls... I think I'm adding a dollar to each turkey per day after this... like if he calls tomorrow, they're 11 dollars! and if he calls tuesday, 12 dollars... etc. That way, if he doesn't end up wanting them, I don't mind, and if he does, I've made a profit... which might ease the pain of letting some go... but if I end up with 7 turkeys, I'm going to be HERE a lot... thanks for the advice!!!

I do agree. At the same time I completely understand how you have grown attached to them and want to keep them, BUT something you might not be thinking about, they won't be cute in a couple months, they will be fighting, hormonal, ugly pain in the butts that you will be glad to send to butcher and GREATLY enjoy their tasty meat. You aren't being stupid, just think about all of your options logically.

ugly?! UGLY!!!! you must be kidding! turkeys are the most beautiful birds god/goddess ever created! EVER! end of story!!!!!!

I know I know I know, I actually love my guys and find them to be gorgeous, but with all the hormones and fighting it does make butcher time more bearable. I refuse to eat meat that has be tortured so that it can be put on my plate so I raise my own and can feel good that they were loved and lived a good life. We each have to find what works for us.

Why on earth not? It got pawned off on YOU in the first place. It's just luck of the draw, you ordered a bunch and you got what you got. Unless you had an agreement with this guy that says he gets the best of the flock, then he simply gets what he gets - the same way you did. You could give each turkey a number, and he rolls dice to see which he gets. Or you could give each one a name, and he pulls name tags out of a bag. Or you could just pen up three turkeys and that's what he gets. I don't see any issue with it at all.

Of course if you're developing a tender spot for that particular turkey, you could tip the odds a bit - give that bird the number"1" but give the guy a PAIR of dice to roll...
