Am I doing this wrong.....

I only have 4 birds, and only one is too young for layer feed. I do have her separated, but it's interesting to learn I could let them mingle if I give them all starter/grower food and leave the oyster shells out for the layers. I was afraid the young chick would eat oyster shell too soon. She's such a little pig in chicken's clothing!

The only thing with feeding starter/grower to everyone is that it shouldn't be medicated. The chicks may pick at the oyster shell out of curiosity, but won't usually eat it (or enough to be harmful.)

I have a friend who has fed starter/grower to her flock most of her life, and has beautiful healthy chickens.

Thank you for that, Carla. My starter/grower is medicated. The local feed and seed owner told me it was state law her for her starter/grower to be medicated. I can always order online!

Thanks everyone...

I'll change from layer to normal feed, and have oystergrit available for those who want to eat it.

As mine, as I said already, freerange with plenty of grass, grubs etc...and not in stark brown dirt run as some have them, they probably get what they need anyway.
