My male has never messed with the chicks...but just keep a watchful eye out.

agreed, also make sure the babies have enough room to get out of the male's(or the other peahens! they can be worse than the male) way. I've left many peahens with babies with the cocks in the pen. The only time the males reacted was if a chick 'got in his way' and he'd give it a bop on the head to tell it to move away.
