Hey everyone,
My Aunt Betty bought 8 "Amberlink sexed pullets"(not straight run)from Family farm&home about 4 months ago.

She told me today that 5 of them ended up being roosters and only 3 ended up being hens.
I told her that its strange that the hatchery would mess up so bad because the Amberlink is a color sexed linked commercial hybrid.

Well after doing some research on Amberlinks I found out they are not a color sex link hybrid.
They are a feather sexed link hybrid that can only be gendered from wing tip length from 1-10 days old.

I did some more research and I found that many more people have had a problem with getting roosters from stores selling "Amberlink sexed pullets" from farm stores.

So why even bother making such a hybrid? Isn't the whole point of sex link is its easy to tell the gender?

Isn't that kind of a waste of time for the commercial egg industry too?

I'm sure you probably checked, but did you make sure she actually got 8 Amberlinks? Farm stores are terrible about getting chicks mixed up, most of the employees have no clue how to tell the breeds apart. A friend of ours bought 50 Amberlink pullets and only got 1 cockerel.

I believe they are all Amberlinks.
I told her to get ISA Brown's next time they are easier to gender.

That's good to know; I thought they were sex-linked as well.
Don't know if this has anything to do with it, but the Family Farm & Home store here switched to Hoover's hatchery from Townline hatchery this year. I've not heard any complaints about their chicks until this year. I'm sure being a chain the switch was store wide. Maybe Hoover isn't quite up to par in either sexing or ethics as Townline?? :idunnoJust think its odd FFH is just now getting TSC-type complaints about their chicks.

I'm just curious if some of these places

Hoover's seems to be a mess and that is where our TSC gets their birds and that's always a mess.
I just wondered how honest the smaller places are about their puller bins actually being pullets and not straight run.
I think ambers should be easily sexed with decent accuracy.
I know we have a small place here that sells pan fry which are almost all if not all cockerels but they don't share that info. I always see people buying them up because they're cheap but they are clueless they aren't buying pullets.
