Ameraucana Standard questions

we just got 6 about 5 wk old Ameraucanas from a lady at our local Co-op that she got from a hatchery. Don't know the name of hatchery, but could get if someone needs it.

My son is going to show them(4H) (local fair) if they meet the standards.

ok, so here's my ???
on the standards site....
It says"Disq. include presence of ear tuffs and absence of beard and muffs."
Does anyone have the pics to show me the difference?

ALSO, There's NOTHING on the legs or feet...
So how do we know if their legs and feet are correct?

BTW, they're all different colors, is there a better color to show than another?

I think there's a roo in the batch, it has bigger tail feathers than the rest, making me wonder....hmmm....

I meant on the leg and feet, the coloring on them. are they all the same? or different b/c there colors are different?

I don't know much about 4-H, but do know that hatcheries don't sell true Ameraucana, they sell Easter Eggers. If you want true Ameraucana you need to get them from a breeder. I know it matters in an APA sanctioned show, but not sure about 4-H......
Hopefully someone can help you out.
If it means anything, my county fair had all easter eggers labeled as ameraucana, but they aren't sanctioned

The chances of having a showable bird from hatchery stock is very slim. Were you closer I would be happy to give him some very well started showable Wheaten and Blue Wheaten chicks. For colors and the type recquired to meet standards, the The American Standard of Perfection is the final word.

This is Harmony, my silver duckwing araucana: See the clumps of feathers growing more or less straight out from her cheeks? They are tufts, and are attached to a peduncle (think skin tag) below her earlobes.

And this is DandeLyon--notice the blue sideburns (muffs) and beard? Each feather grows directly out of his face, covering the entire cheek & chin areas.

There are only 8 recgonized colors of Ameraucanas that are eligible to show. Go to the Ameraucana Breeders club for pictures of each.

well, i got my answer...they came from a hatchery, she's sending papers on them soon... now what....
do i tell her that they are not true birds? They probably have to go into a different group, maybe other breeds....but EE are not a breed, right?

First, many 4H clubs do not use the standards of Perfection. They are looking at the overall health of the bird and many shows here, the knowledge of the young person who is exhibiting the bird.

So my questions is have you contacted the organizers of the show and requested the criteria the birds and exhibitors will be tested on?
