Hi Amy,
So would me OExWhAm I got from you be considered an EE?

Yes- it was a possibility she could have been all wheaten, but her color gives her away. Did she get yellow feet from the wellie side?

(Jes- you should check out the cochin thread today! )

No... She has green feet!

Hi,
I am hoping someone will know what to do about this. I bought two really pretty Ameraucana's on Saturday at a poultry swap. Most of the birds this vender had was missing their tail feathers, but the roo I bought has a nice full tail. He also had a nice full beard. Not now.

He is plucking his own beard out!! I stood there and watched him do it!!! I have NEVER seen a chicken do this before. I have seen the odd post about it, but I can't believe he is plucking his beautiful beard.

I am hoping it is because of a nutritional deficiency which will right itself in time. I mostly let my flock free range, shoud I cut quarantine short and turn them out to save their feathers? Will his beard grow back? I don't know what to do with him I would love some suggestions. Thanks.

I would love to know too (before I replace my wonderful layers with Wheaten ameraucanas)

thanks!!

They are total slackers, AND I just found out I cannot breed my SW roo to his siblings. I think I will just keep a quad so I can put them in a small pen. If they never give me another egg, oh well- they will be pretty bug catchers.

Miriam- don't get rid of your layers! I have several in my Am coops- orps, cochins, wellies.... I only hatch the blue eggs, and if anybody wants some cheap EE test eggs- they are right there! Same thing with my marans coop- I have houdans and orps and EEs in there, but I only hatch the obvious marans eggs. No need to lose the variety.

Steve- the green feet are from the yellow from the welsummer and the slate of the ams. You can hardly ever get rid of the yellow. You can use her for OEs though

Don't be alarmed, I say. My Wheaten girls aren't anything worthy of breeding except for my Buff project and some sort of EE project, but I still keep them (for the Buffs) also because they're wonderful layers (when they're not broody

I have a question for the experts. I know there is an issue with the BW/W Am cockerels having too much white in the cheeks. If the color was going to darken, at what age would this happen?

I've got a few BW boys just starting their juvenile molt that have AMAZING cheeks that are so puffy you have to look for their eyes but they are still very white. I am wondering when this will change, if ever, to decide on who I am going to keep. My boys were late bloomers and at 16 weeks old have only just recently developed all of their blue coloration in the body.

Your boys beards should be all Blue if BW or Black if Wheaten, this is an issue though that a lot of breeder's are working on. Your cockerel's beards should color up and you'll want to use the one with the darkest beard (and other good traits) for breeding.

ETA: I'm no expert, BTW.

Also, I've been told you should at least wait until 20 weeks to make any decisions on who to keep in regards to color.
