Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

The leg color will change as they grow.As for sexing try the tail feather method. The females will have longer tail feathers.I will be posting some chick pictures later today.I have some things to do first.

The leg color will extend to cover the toes. She probably had white wing tips at hatch.Extended black.

Oh no you're not getting off that easy. Please explain that! I'm guessing this has something to do with the dynamics of EE vs birchen or something?

Here are some recessive white bantams fresh out of the incubator. There is always some variation in how smokey they are and to a lesser extent in leg color. If the leg color is fine on the parents the chicks should color up also.Genetics is facinating stuff. Each bloodline can have its own normal.

Jerry here are the 3 chicks I hatch for the white bantam pair. The one thing I noticed is the leg and feet coloring. The yellow chick has pale yellow legs and the other two have light green. So much different from the lavender chicks who have really dark legs. Is the color difference in the chicks tell you whether male or female?

So here are the chick pics as promised.I have both kinds of black in the lav project. As you can see the solid black and lavender chick have slate all the way to the toenail. Those with with extended black have the white wing tips and bellies that Jean mentioned plus the tips of the toes appear yellow. Not to worry these areas will darken as the chicks mature.

Jerry, I can't remember.... is it best to have the lavenders based on birchen or extended black?

I remember the best blacks should be based on extended black (better green sheen)and gold and the best blues would be birchen and silver. (prevents the reddish brown leakage)

Forgot to mention these black/lav chicks came from white hens.So they are black split for lav and white. This is not a cross for newbies to try as you must test the F2 generation to find out which birds are not carriers of white.I made this cross because of traits I wanted from the whites.I share this information so you can see for yourself what I got.Never know what information someone will find usefull.
