Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I want to add these pics to see if any one can verify my inclination as to my white EE bantam chick being a rooster. how's his conformation? leg color? ect. He is a hatchery bird, but hey, everyone's got to start somewhere, and this might just be where I'm starting. And do you think he would be alright for breeding, that way I only have to purchase a white ameraucana bantam hen. I seen in an earlier post someone said that if the feet are pink then your good, and yellow no good, would that apply in this case? lol. thanks for any replies.

To Kismet: what a beautiful bird, what do you call that color? I have American Game hens & some Bantams, looking for a couple of "regular" hens for laying eggs(where I can find them) lol Is this breed good layers?

Theseare 2 of the Lavender chicks I hatched from eggs bought on BYC. They're 5 wks old now. Would you all agree the 1st one's a boy? I see 3 distict rows on his comb. The 2nd picture I think is a girl. Does that look right?

Am I the only one that thinks this looks like a roo? Comb looks a little pink for 5 weeks.
Hope I'm wrong.

Trish

Wheaten is a sex-link color. Her chest would be much darker is she was a cockerel. Her comb area would be wider at the top as well. I do agree that she's a bit gingery. My hen on the left is gingery. See how much lighter the girls on the right are?

Ksane - Yes, the first one looks like a roo and the 2nd looks a pullet to me. I am in no way an expert at sexing Ameraucanas, though.

Oh I really hope so! Can you see her legs well enough in this photo? I can take another photo if not.

Also, she doesn't have a beard now, but when she hatched she had big puffy cheeks and puffy down under her chin--a big contrast to the barred rocks that hatched at the same time. Will she stay clean faced like this or is it possible she just doesn't have her beard yet? Hope springs eternal ;)

HappyMtn, I agree, since my understanding based on what I've read here is that she shouldn't have so much dark coloring. She'll be for eating eggs only, we don't (and can't) have a roo. She has a wonderful personality, and I'm just hoping so hard that she's a she! I also like the way Ameraucanas look and I'd still love her if she was half Orp, but am happy to hear she's not. She was a bonus egg and I love her to pieces, no complaints here!

Thanks to you all, I really appreciate your help!

Sara

Sara, if I had to say - and it would be an educated guess at this point - I'd say you have a Wheaten Ameraucana. I'm not up enough on genetics to know how much the Blue Orp male might affect the overall coloration of a W or BW female. I can tell you that, having hatched a couple dozen chicks from a single mating of a BW Am cock over Welsummer hen(s) - I don't recall now if it was a single female or more than one - the result was amazing as there was a HUGE variety of traits and colorations from the crossing of just those two breeds.

Having said that, your chick looks to be the right age where they lose their puffs that they're born with and start getting in their muffs and beard. The legs appear to be starting to turn blue - which is the norm. The beak color struck me as a bit too yellow but it's been a year since I've looked at any AM chicks and I can't remember what they look like now. Just another reason why I am making myself a photographic week-by-week catalog of my chicks thru their first year. Other than that, it's still too early to tell for sure what she'll turn out right but the overall coloration appears to be Wheaten pullet.

God Bless,

Just had to post this pic somewhere...
All these eggs have a Splash Ameraucana daddy so thought here was as good a place as any.
I have here:
black copper marans eggs (olive eggers)
black ameraucana, (for some blue ameraucana chicks)
blue andalusian (practice chicks for my laced blue ameraucana project)
Nothing like an almost full incubator!
