Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I know you aren't supposed to count your chickens before they hatch but my first lavender Ameraucana is actively zipping (pipped last night), second one just pipped -- 14 to go!!

Hereis a pic of my birchen ameraucana bantam cockerel. This is a project. He is from a birchen rooster and brown red hen.Should be breedable now.Trying to improve breast lacing. Will use him on brown red hens and save the birchen looking chicks.Birchen is the silver version of brown red.Trying to complete the color family.Should be useful to have a close color to cross to.Right now if you want to breakup the inbreeding you can use black or other clors but it messes up the lacing and by the time you get back the pattern you have lost most of the benefit

Thanks for the info on clutches. I put an egg in as late as 2 days on a guess. I was worried about broody's dedication as well. She is serious enough to have stayed broody after an hour long move from her first owner to us and she is steadfast in her seat on the nest. Her sister doesn't get an egg in there.

I just wanted to share that I should have the over-run by chickens title. A woman here who does some very cool breeding and experimenting with breeds just got a notice about how many chickens she can have. She downsized quickly in an effort to get ready to fight this notice. I got some beautiful Ameraucanas- two splash hens and a Ramey splash roo... 6 blavk Ams from other big breeders... and so with all the others I took in at that time plus what I already had I have 44 birds here. Thank goodness half are still under a light. What am I doing!?

The Ams have such beautiful beards and conformation. I LOVE the splashes.

Can somebody please post a couple photos of your blue wheaten and regular wheaten pullets? I have two here, and one is much darker than the other. I was thinking they they were both regular wheatens, but then realized a don't know if I've ever seen a blue wheaten hen in person. (They are 12-13 weeks now.)

Thank you!

I can do that when I get home. Sorry I have not picks here.

We have only had this breed for a year so take this as a beginner's insight - Really the noticeable difference is what color those few colored tail feathers are coming in. My splash looks white or very light blue with a tiny splash. My blue is light blue to medium blue and my Wheaties are black. My Wheaten girls have darker blond body color when fully mature.

I say mine...this is my 13 yr. old DD's flock. I am developing and affinity for them though!
