I noticed! I think it's because of the infrared heat lamp. Giving an eerie glow ....

PS. Everybody still thriving this morning - 48 hours after release from their sticky prisons. And they are gradually getting fluffier. Fingers crossed for my little rescued stickies ....

At what age can you tell a roo from a pullet?

I have three blue ameraucanas that are 7 weeks old. One holds itself taller and stretches it's neck out more, but it's also been slow to feather and is smaller so maybe it's just developmentally behind and the neck looks thinner/longer because it's not totally feathered? Anyway, none of them are developing combs at all. What do I look for and when?

THANKS from this excited newbie!

Welcome to the wonderful mystery world of Ameraucanas! It is very often all but impossible to be confident with Ameraucanas until either they crow or lay an egg. Some make it fairly clear early but most keep us guessing. Share some pictures with us. You'll get LOADS of opinions!!

I am so glad you got as many healthy happy chicks as you did Barb! They look great, even if it was a stressful hatch for ya.

New question: I have Lav Ams from Shaffer and Blacks from Cree and a few others. All the blacks have a body composition similar to an Orloff. Tall, long neck. Shaffer's sweet hens are more like Orp bodies. What/why/how??

Simple answer: depends on the priorities of the folks you bought your stock from. I think that's probably one of the things I enjoy most about relatively new breeds/varieties. They are variable. Decide what YOU like and hope others agree AND that it meets the Standard!!!

Find breeders who have birds you like and buy from them!!

This is why you need BOTH the blacks and the lavs- to get the "orpy" lavs true to type. You're off to a good start.
I don't mind my old Shaffer girls one bit- they have awesome egg color and great personalities, even if they are broody 1/2 the time!
