Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I think splash breed true- when bred together they produce randomly patterned white and blue spotted offspring.
Its that the pattern and tones can be inconsistent, therefore they are thought to be hard to standardize.

I wouldn't want to let a technicality discourage anybody from raising splash though. Its so trivial.

When splash are bred together they lose their spots becoming basically white or very nearly white. As Walt explained earlier, however, it is expected that blue birds are regularly injected back into splash breeding programs in order to keep the coloured "splashes". (Being a blue girl, I LOVE the splash. I deliberately work to get it because it's like a crap shoot. Just never know what might pop out of that egg!!

Lavenders are also tricky because lavender to lavender very quickly leads to feather problems. So black has to be used in a quality lavender breeding program as well.

Same thing with Frizzles - but now I'm REALLY wandering ....

I was just talking about in ameraucanas. Literally - they do breed true- to randomness. Its common knowledge that its accepted in other breeds.

And splash x splash leads to fading with repeated breedings.
I never had an issue in orps or cochins (can't forget the marans!) becoming white after just one generation of crossing.
The lavenders are a whole seperate can of worms. I best keep my mouth shut or I might get banned again.

I think we are a year out on the breeders and I have been asking over and over again for members to show their birds.

So, if all goes well maybe by the end of this year or beginning of next.

Great. The members really do need to show those birds...it also creates a lot of interest. lavender is a pretty color on a chicken, so the more people that see them the better .

What do I have? Splash or lt Blue? Is it a roo? I was looking at them today and he (I think) has some blue in his neck feathers and some are just buff is that what y'all talk about the neck feathers?

This guy is from my Wheatens. And I don't know if my Roo is blue or not. I have a blue pullet, so I am looking for a splash to confirm the roo is blue

I don't think I have any blues from the other pullets so I am losing hope he is blue.

I posted this in the Breed Gender section and only got 1 opinion on the roo's color PLEASE HELP! I had another Blue Wheaten Roo and he was about this color and a Wheaten that was darker so I just don't know for sure his color.

Looks like the splash wheaten cockerel I just sold, DMRippy. So far my splash pullets look wheaten and white with very little blue splashes here and there. My only cockerel had more color, like the one in your pics. I could be wrong, but I'd eat my shoe if I was wrong (any my shoes see a lot of chicken poo).

I may have to cheat and disinfect them first... LOL!
My girls have no color at all - even spread out. I have 2 growing out from 2 different lines. See how he has that edging on his wing feathers? My boy had that and not the girls.

ETA: Got a head and breast picture?

Looking for hatching eggs for Blue Ams that will be are a larger size to add size by my skinny flock. I am growing out some chicks, 3 out of 5 look like roos, and they are tall, long-legged, and thin. Can you refer me to a breeder that tends toward larger birds, preferably with pretty combs? TIA

You can't judge them for final size yet. The cockerels will be a bit lanky until about 14 months of age.

How about posting some pics????
