Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Are they really? My hen lays green eggs and has a tail. EEs don't have tails.

Tolipgirl Many hatcheries sell what they call Araucanas/Americanas/Ameraucanas which are not true breeds and do not meet the breed standard, but they do lay a blue or green egg. The nickname for those hatchery birds is Easter Egger. They are delightful, and may have some traits of "true" Aracaucas (no tail, ear tufts) or Ameraucanas (beard and muff). The purpose of this thread is to promote the real Ameraucana, which may explain the reply you got. However many of us are new to chickens or this breed and were similarly misled when we purchased our chicks. Don't let the curtness throw you - there is a lot of good info here.

Thank you!
Wish I had read that a month ago. I usually pull some sprouted grains or sunflower seeds out of the ground and give them to my brooder chicks with roots and dirt and all. They love to scratch at the dirt and run around like they have a treasure with a tender root in their beaks.

With my chicks from John Blehm I was more careful. I wanted to be extra careful and not expose them to anything too soon so I did not give them any sprouted seeds with dirt.

With all the reading I have done how the heck did I miss the coccidiosis treatment subject? Never had a problem so I guess I just ignored it for more important things like... "is that black bird an E/E black or ER/ER black?" lol... Jeez Christie...learn how to take care of chicks first....

I hope they recover quickly for you.
We have our chicks in a grow out pen that is filled with pine shavings. I had read somewhere not to throw out the old shavings, so I just leave it in there and top up with fresh about once a week. Apparently, microorganisms develop and eat the cocci in the pen. Also, chicks exposed to a little cooci develop immunity. I have inadvertently been doing that. That's what I love about this forum; you can learn things so many things from others' experience.

Not stupid, misled by people that are trying to mislead you to increase sales.

I bought Americauna hatching eggs form a feed store. The guy said: "These are Americauna eggs, those are Marans eggs and those are meat bird eggs." I said I will take 8 EE eggs and 4 Marans eggs please.

The eggs were green, not blue. When they hatched, the legs were the wrong color and I see the exact chickens on the EE Braggers page all the time. Definitely not Americaunas.

Come say hi at the EE Braggers thread. Later get a real Americauna from some one on this thread

Welcome to BYC. Send me a PM if you want help with anything.

Nope, you are not stupid at all! When I first got interested in chickens, I went to my local feed store. They had Buff orps and EE's but I was told they were Ameraucanas. I later learned by finding out on here that they were EE's. Everyone has to learn. And there is never a stupid question. Unless it didn't get asked.
