Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Thank you for posting these pictures of your wheaten babies. I have been looking for something like this to help me understand the groth of color in my babies. I have four that were hatched after a fox killed my prize young hen . She was a year old and a beautiful shade of silver with a white silver beard . She was a gift from a friend who wanted to see me get starteed in chickens .

The father was a blue wheaten Rooster whom I had purchased from the sale area of my first local show his picture is my Avitar. His name is Too noose ben Hebeeb. He is 7 months old.

First off, Welcome to BYC!

I am really sorry you lost your hen. It is wonderful that you were able to save her babies.

Your rooster does not look like an Ameraucana. His legs are bright white. There are a lot of birds that have the same "Wheaten" coloring - any Red/Black will have that color. Your girl also does not sound like an Ameraucana, I don't know of any that are silver colored - unless you mean Lavender? Did she lay blue or green eggs?

Your babies from that mix will not be Wheatens - but if they came from green/blue eggs they would qualify to be an Easter Egger. Come join us over here, on the thread that celebrates Easter Eggers: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/273489/the-ee-braggers-thread/11580#post_11389429

I can see slate on the rooster's legs if you enlarge the photo.

Ah, the sun wiped out the color?

But, even if she had a Wheaten Ameraucana rooster, if it was over a Silver colored girl they would not be Wheatens.. unless there is a Silver colored Wheaten? I guess we would have to see pictures of the parents to see if the Wheaten colors in chicks would help her to see what her babies will turn out like.

I, too, have had horrible experiences hatching blue wheaten eggs received in the mail. 1/8 and then 1/7. Sadly the last hatch of 1/7 had two crippled feet. Nice chick otherwise - had to cull. It was sad but necessary.

This weekend, at the Chicken Swap in Sharpsburg, MD, I purchased 5 blue wheaten/ wheaten chicks from Kat LaDue (Signature Feathers). SHe is well known for having good stock & I enjoyed chatting with her. I am hoping to get some pullets for my juvenile blue wheaten roo. :)

Good luck hatching. I have a batch of BBS this saturday.

I was at the swap also and bought 2 Wheatens from her as well. Beautiful egg color from her birds. Now I'm keeping my fingers crossed that at least one of them is a pullet. I have an Easter Egger that lays very nice mint green eggs. I'm hoping to add blue to the egg basket.
