Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

What he has is nothing like these pictures. My cockerel looks like the the black on his (old) feathers has faded out in the sun but the color seems to have a good bit of shine to it. I'll see if I can get pictures of a few feathers I pulled this morning. It may not show up in a photo. Thanks for your pictures.
I didn't even really look at your bird, just put pics up to show what leakage on a blue bird can look like, as you requested. It would be a bit harder to see on a splash one, I'd guess.

I have a 6 year old Ameraucana hen whose beard has faded with age to brownish, but it's just age on her, not any flaw. She has no bleed through and her feather quality is spectacular at her age-good girl is currently laying, too. Fading happens for many reasons, especially with the blues.

Quote: I would not say it is bad at all. I would say it is average and what I do not like about a few of my birds that free range. They loose the look of the lacing and it sort of just smudges together as it bakes in the sun..
He is a pretty bird and I would like to see what he throws. I am sure he will make beautiful baby's. When he does his adult moult his lacing might come in better. That might not be till March or next year in October.

What is the last pictured bird? I have a one that has a similar look and was just curious :)
I had some blue cockerels with leakage-their sire was black and had quite a bit of it. Their mothers were show worthy blue hens. Here's a son of his, a blue with gold leakage. Their sire: One of his later sons, who is an extreme example of what can happen with bleed through base color--he was almost all gold and silver when he grew up. Older picture, same male:
The one I have: Came from a breeder that has Marans & Black ameraucana so I figured it to be a cross.

The last bird is the same as the one in the photo just before it, just older. He was sired by the Black Ameraucana over one of his blue Ameraucana hens, so he wasn't a cross, but a pure Ameraucana, albeit with a major fault.

I love this breed and really want more. I am in central AL, where is a good place to start. I have two hens now that are a cross between a black roo and a wheaten hen, so pure but not the right colors. I love them the most out of my 30 other hens of different heavy breeds. I real want blue, splash, blue wheaten, lavender, and wheaten. I have had a hard time finding pure and not mixed. my two girls give me the most beautiful sky blue eggs and I crossed a barred rock roo and a buff orpington roo with one and have two cute chicks. They were surprise hatches, as I had a hen go broody after we left eggs in the nest boxes overnight. I now have a cute barred chick with a beard and muffs, and a buff chick with muffs. I will enjoy these guys, but I want more pure hens and roos to cross them with. I saw that my pet chicken is offering wheaten and blue, but was unsure if they are pure even though they claim they are pure and not ee's. I am not a millionaire so I can not pay $50 for one bird, but I do want true ameraucanas. These are my two girls Shamrock the darker one and Lyla. They are not a recognized color and I realize they would classified as ees, but they came from a breeder who had a black roo get into her wheaten pen, and cause un-showable stock. She took them to the local feed store and they gave them away. I wish she had the colors I want, but I cant seem to find anyone in my area that does. They meet all other standards, but I want some hens and a roo that do meet all the standards. They are the best layers and shamrock even knows her name!

They are gorgeous. Let me just say that I don't think is accurate to classify a crossing of Ameraucana color lines as EE's. Yes they will be non-standard colors but still they are Ameraucana's not crossed with other chicken breeds like he EE's were/are. Their color looks to be between a Black Pattern Gold Colombian and a Multi-peciled Gold Partrigde.

There is a breeder in Nashville, TN who will have black show quality chicks in the spring. She advertizes on Craig's List.

Thank you. I am very proud of my girls. They are so cute and when they were younger they looked like little chicken hawks! I can't wait to get more I just want the blue, blue wheaton, wheaton, and lavender colors. Maybe a nice black roo for back crossing.
This is shamrock at four months old, below are pictures of her first chick with our barred rock roo and then our buff orpington roo. Not realy planed hatches, but we had a hen go broody and just let her hatch what she was setting on.

The birds pictured are not a cross between two different varieties of ameraucana. They are easter eggers.

Ameraucanas have white skin and crossing two different varieties does not give you yellow skin, which is what your birds are displaying.

KiwiLand, your pretty hens have green legs, which denote yellow skin, as Jean said. They'd be Easter Eggers, pretty as they are. That is one thing to look for when trying to decide if your bird is a cross of colors or just a complete mixed breed EE.

Personally, I love my EE hens as well as my super nice Ameraucana hens. I have an EE hen who was a project bird for Salmon Ameraucanas from a breeder. June has slate legs, lays gorgeous bluish green jumbo eggs and is going on 6 years old now. Great hen, wouldn't give her up for anything. And I have a lovely EE hen, who is 1/2 Blue Wheaten Ameraucana and 1/2 EE, with proper eye and leg color and great tail color for a wheaten Ameraucana, who lays the most gorgeous, intensely blue eggs and is a spectacular broody. She raised two sets of chicks this year, her first two, and she will turn 3 this spring.

Then there's my Tiny, who most here know, who looks like a Sumatra, beardless, spurs, very small bodied, aggressive, lays brown eggs, and she came from a lovely blue egg out of a good looking BBS Ameraucana flock, a complete throwback accident of nature, that hen. I can't even figure out what to call her.
