Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Hey, I'm sorry if i have asked this already but I'm still not clear on this point. What's the visual difference between a EE and a Ameraucana? I know that a EE is not a pure Ameraucana but how do you tell? What's the diferance between them that you can tell them apart ( how can you tell a true Ameraucan from EE in a picture say? I love this breed and really want to learn more

)
Thanks!

If you go to the ABC website listed in a recent post there is a photo gallery of pic of the colors that Ameraucanas come in. If they are not that color they are EE. If they don't have certain Ameraucana traits they are EE.

EE can be easier to sex based on the colors that EE come in. EE come in LOTS of colors mixes and are very pretty birds.

Visual clear signs are green legs as opposed to slate or black color. The other clear signs as the other posted mentioned are the color of the bird. Off the top of my head recognized colors of Ameraucana are Black, Blue, Wheaten, Blue Wheaten, buff, white, silver and red/brown. Here is a good article on the differences and the confusion.

Your girl is very pretty. Is she a Columbian Wyandotte or light brahma EE?
That is sooo funny that you asked that. I was told that she was from a Sussex project someone was working on. I really don't know what she meant. But on that same day another nice lady gave me this massive beauty;
A white standard Brahma. Both received on the same day from 2 different people and the color patterns are so similar.

Thanks! I have a rooster and a hen, there mom was a Blue Ameraucana and the dad was a Black Ameraucnana.... Does this make them EE's?

Blue crossed with black gives blue and black chicks. Blue is a modifier to black, so they are the same color family. Two copies of blue gives you splash. Blue, Black, and Splash are used to make more blues (and blacks or splash depending on what cross). It's a normal breeding and isn't crossing colors.

I am trying to decide which cockerel to breed to my splash pullet in the spring. Both my cockerels, a blue and a splash, are from the same breeding pen. The pullet is from another pen and the breeder says they are not closely related. He recommended I breed the splash to the splash. He said that splash to blue tended to produce blues that are too light and washed out.

I've sent pictures of the three birds, but haven't heard back from him yet. Since I first contacted him about which cockerel to use, he's had some wicked ice storms so he my queries might not be very high on his priority list.

Can the experienced breeders on the forum offer me some insight into why one would avoid blue to splash, preferring splash to splash? If I want to breed beautiful blues, how do I get them? By using black?

I want to order another bunch of chicks from this breeder, with the intention of breeding blues and splashes. I would really appreciate the experienced breeders' input. Thanks.
