Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Basically If the original poster can take Ameraucana out of the title of the threadI think it would keep 90 percent of the ee people out if the word Ams is used instead
Interesting idea. The sad part is that most here would welcome anyone interested in learning about ameraucanas whether newbies or experienced... As long as we could avoid becoming mired in the EE vs AM discussion. Maybe we could rename it the "groundhog day" thread. Lol

Im not trying to insult anyone. I just think 90% of people who buy EE wouldnt know what ams are so it wouldnt come up on their search when they come home from the feed store and search ameraucana threads. Also most people id guess easily 80% that know what real ameraucana are would know ams is short for ameraucana.
I guess I'm not an "educated person". If I saw a threa titled Ams I'd have no idea what it was about.
i edited the post i really cant believe offense was taken. It wasnt my intention nor did i stop to think if that one line would be nit picked. Sry for offending you. I was only trying to help. I really do think if ameraucana was taken out it would stop all the EE issues on this thread. Also it would read the same ams thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds. Everyone here is already subcribed so it would stop future problems

some newbies who do buy real ameraucana would be welcome ofcourse. It might take them awhile to figure the ams wording and find the thread but that might be worth it if thousands of EE post are stopped

BTW, I believe that NYREDS is an APA judge. He was posting for while on the cream legbar threads.

Yes i know. I would have never said he was uneducated. I know he has a lot more knowledge in chickens than me It should not have been taken that way. its the old internet post where someone's intentions can't be seen my intention was not to insult it was meant to be helpful and stop a problem

How old before I can expect cockerels to take on protective duties for a free range flock? I have one aggressive year-old Ameraucana who needs to go to freezer camp. My chicks are 6 weeks old. I have 12 straight-run Ameraucana chicks. The rooster I have is really good with the hens and very protective. It's with people we have a bit of a problem.

Thank you. I really do want to produce a good dual purpose breed, as I know that originally Ameraucana's were developed with that idea in mind. My project Lavender pullets have been the most inconsistent layers of any of the breeds I currently have.
The lavenders were more green eggs and not good layers when I got them. Plus size was a problem. I improved egg color and laying by using some project dominant white hens split for black. The white was easy to select away from. Size was still lacking. Next I added size from some larger lavender. Greenish eggs showed again. I next added a Smith split. I now have some good egg color, size better type good layers. Selection is ongoing. It takes time. Remember John Blehm used bantam to create large fowl lavender. It has been a long journey. Each breeder has made improvements based on their own priorities. So there are differences between bloodlines. Even so they trace back to John. Related but they can be very different on some traits.

Jerry,
I had some of John;s bantam but sold them. They were hawk bait for me. The hawks love bantams and I live near a hawk santuary.
I started mine with a total different line and size was definately no issue. Paul had two lines one with John;s and one with mine and luckily I could buy some of my own blood back from him after he added his blacks last year.

I had two years of tragedies. One the fox killed my just about finished flock. The next year a weasel killed the best chicks so have to regroup. I bought blacks that were basically junk and had to dispose of them. That is really funny that blacks were that bad but they were.

I got a real nice splash from Paul last year so he will be my upgrade since the blacks I got from several people were really culls in my opinion.

I started out with blacks from Larry Clionsky and they were fantastic, large birds and nice looking geared to the SOP. Larry did not have anything lately that I could get maybe this year he will. His birds were just great and unfortunately I culled all my blacks thinking I was in good shape. I wish I had them back but that is part of the hobby, always hindsight.

I have two pens this year but only 8 lavender hens not like when I had over 20 hens and I sold some people hatching eggs.
Plus I have 3 black split hens but then the spash rooster and a lavender rooster is in with 6 lavender hens so that cuts the quanity of lavender chicks in 1/2. I am gearing for type not 100% lavender chicks.

Thanks for posting and updating. It helps the newbies to see how each breeder handles a project. Different approaches and yet the same results as the goal. Somewhere among these beginners are the future of the breed and club. Yes I sometimes get tired of the old question is this a Ameraucana but on those days I try to be quiet. Let someone else answer when I am not in the mood.

Great to see you on here, Harry!
Will you be attending the May 4th show at the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds?

Will anyone be there? I am always looking for that perfect wheaten cockerel/roo...
