Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Not true. I have sex linked EE and you can't tell them from my Blacks or from blues. They have all the right stuff to look like an Ameraucana. They ALL carry one copy of the yellow leg gene and that will not express with a first cross.

From what I read on a thread here about him he sell EE so I would err on the side of EE. I would not sell birds or chicks without knowing 100% they are TRUE Ameraucanas.....

I totally agree. To know for sure breed him to a hen with zero beard/muffs. If the chicks come out with a beard/muffs then you would know for sure. If you don't have access to a beardless hen, you can let him got through a molt. That is the other way to know for sure.

The black is the hatched baby. The grey one is a purchased d'uccle.

Before you sell them as PURE at least test for yellow legs. That gene is recessive and you would need to breed it to a bird with yellow legs. Also 1 chick is not a good sampling. Even if you get the "right" features you need to see if he had 2 copies so that would mean 10 chicks at least and if they ALL have the right stuff you are on the right track.

Still without know the parentage I would not sell them as Ams. Most people don't care if they are EE they just want the blue/green eggs. People that want Ameraucana want to KNOW they are PURE. 80% of the people that are local just want the eggs.

I don't plan on breeding to sell. I just have them for eggs. And I may have to get rid of my roo soon; as one of my neighbors is complaining and posting signs on the mailbox about noise ordinances and such. We are allowed chickens. Roosters if we have 20,000 sq ft. I have about 15,000 sq ft. So if the county comes knocking, i have to give up my man.
