Yay! I was hoping for a lavender or blue.
I just noticed that the black one has a tiny brown spot on his head that doesn't show up in the picture. Does that mean he won't be a black?

My husband and I would like to start breeding and hatching pure Ameracuanas in the next year or so.  What is the best way to get started?

Where do you live? Go to the Ameraucana Breeders club site, and you can find a list of breeders in your state and what they breed.

What colors are you leaning toward? If you are interested in showing, but want to start out simple, I think we could all agree that the solid colors (buffs/blacks/whites) are the way to go. IMHO, the wheaten/blue wheaten varieties are the most "striking" coloration, but breeding the multiple colored birds (wheaten/ blue wheaten/ silvers/brown red etc) comes with a totally different set of challenges. There's just a lot more to worry about when you are dealing with the multiple colored breeds. That can be frustrating, but the rewards definitely make it worth it IMO

I completely agree. It's also important to get good quality stock and know what the SOP for the variety you plant to breed. You don't have to have perfect birds but getting close is a good way to contribute to the breed.

As promised here are my six LF Ameraucana black chicks from Paul Smith. They are almost 11 weeks old.

Chick #1, Boy?


Chick #2--didn't get a good shot of comb. I want to say boy because of the pink comb, but it might be pink because I has pulling the feathers away from the comb. I'll stay in denial and keep hoping for a girl.

Chick #10, boy? This is the one I like the color the best, but don't like his wings, particularly his left one. It almost looks like a split wing, but I am sure all the feathers are there, just growing in. He has the clearest blue of the four and has nice lacing. He carries his wings too low--I just don't like what is going on with his wings. Thoughts?

Hopping for some help. I ordered some Easter eggers and 2 blue ameraucana's I have identified a dark maybe black ameraucana

But I have two possibles on the others out of both who is the (possibly splash) ameraucana and who is the Easter egger?

Also why are there legs yellow? I know that EE should have green and ameraucana's should have dark gray, but what's up with these? Will they get darker?

Here's a picture of the chicks I posted as 11 week olds above. The bottom two are blue, the light one top left is splash and the dark ones behind are blacks. I was surprised at how orange their legs were, but they went the right color after what seemed like forever, with white/pink bottoms of their feet.
