Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Oh darn... I got dupted... My ameraucana's are starting to show some birchen(?) Color bleeding through in their hackle feathers. The breeder I bought them from was very clear about the difference between an Easter egger and a "true" ameraucana. Can this happen in pure blues and blacks just as an unlucky coincidence?

It's sad to see so many people ending up with EEs. I honestly cannot tell the difference some times. I hatched out this guy 13 weeks ago. Is he a true AM?

He's such a sweetie. I'll keep him either way.

The APA/ABA standards don't address Easter Eggers. It is something that was developed by the Ameraucana Breeders Club (ABC). Here is the official definition taken from the Q&A section of the ABC website:

What are Easter Egg chickens?
The Ameraucana Breeders Club defines an Easter Egg chicken or Easter Egger as any chicken that possesses the blue egg gene, but doesn’t fully meet any breed descriptions as defined in the APA and/or ABA standards. Further, even if a bird meets an Ameraucana standard breed description, but doesn’t meet a variety description or breed true at least 50% of the time it is considered an Easter Egg chicken. By definition an Easter Egger is not a breed of chicken.
(Some have claimed that any variety that isn’t recognized, by the APA/ABA, is an Easter Egger, but that is not true according to the definition above. For example, lavender Ameraucanas breed true and are not Easter Eggers.)

So I got these three boys today - and when I told my husband, his eyes glazed over. So I thought I'd share here!

Not the best shots as they are terrified of me. I can't believe I took all three, but look at them! I'll have to figure something out with them. They are John Blehm lines, his "reject" chicks that a friend got that ended up crowing. I'm not planning on big time breeding, but I have a few nice EEs that I'l like to improve for my own personal flock, and then I do have another John Blehm gal...

I am happy that I have some nice quality birds, that, while not necessarily show quality, are fancy enough for me!

Oh, and did I mention they were all gifted to me? :)
Wow those are some really nice boys. It makes me want some lavenders

Can you show the lavenders since they are really Easter eggers?
They are not EEs but purebreds, just an unrecognized color from what I understand. Like white Boxers or German Shephards - not recognized for the breed show ring (yet) but still purebreds. EEs are like designer dogs - mutts that are cute. Do I have that right?

I am saying this in the nicest way possible. I am not be mean, at all............. When you get chicks from any breeder, you do not know what there quality will be. So how were these considered rejects? Also, be careful throwing around a persons name. Especially with a negative connotation to it.

Yes, they can be shown. Colors that people are trying to get excepted into the breed standard are shown under the AOV (any other variety) class at a show. The highest place they can get in the show is 1st place in that class. So they are not eligible for BOB and so on.

That's good to know. My friend got them directly from him, and she said that he said they did not pass his breeding program standards, hence I called them his rejects. I don't know the wording, but he also had them advertised on CL and I honestly don't know or remember what the phrasing was. You are right, you never know what a chick will turn into. I may be sitting on a chicken gold mine!

That being said, I have a color question - the white was was a lavender to start, I believe, and turned white. Does that make it a splash? (I am just learning). And the black has a little silver under his beak - does that give him a good chance of being split to lavender?
