Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I have never actually compared my egg color to what is on the color chart.  For that matter, I haven't ordered a copy of the egg color chart.

I think the eggs out of most of my girls are a pretty nice blue color, though that is not my primary concern when deciding who to keep and who to cull.  This year, after introducing some new stock last year, I experienced a loss of good beards and muffs, so that will be my focus for this next breeding season, along with the other challenges with the wheatens and blue wheatens. I have culled the suspected hens and the rooster that were responsible for the problem this year and am looking forward to my breeding season to see how well my breeding program is working.

You can see some of my birds, and some of their eggs, on my website, sandcastlesfarm.com.

Yes, I checked out your website and bookmarked it! :)
I agree that you have to pick your battles, it'd be hard to work on type AND eggs... Lots of culling...... :(

Can anyone help me sex this one? I have a blue wheaten and a white. Are supposed to be guaranteed pullets.

MacCana, How old is your chick? I have a EasterEgger that looks like your bird and he is 19 weeks old today. He has a small comb and I am just finding out he is a cockerel. He hasn't crowed yet but he has mated with some of my hens. I would bet that your's is a pullet but how old is she. Mine didn't start getting the comb until a few weeks ago. Maybe 3 or so. I thought he was an Ameraucana but was told different so I don't know if that helps or not. Seems like the comb has a lot to do with the sex but not always.

I'm not sure, it's a few months old, but I wasn't sure of their exact age when I bought them at the tack store. I've also gotten barred rocks & a friend buff O. & they all turned out chicks. It isn't crowing, corralling, or "showing food" to the other 2 it hangs out with (my blue wheaten & BR just joined the adult flock)...So I can't really figure it out yet. Sorry I can't be more help lol. At how many weeks/months do people generally know for sure whether or not its a rooster in this breed? Supposed to be purebred AM of course, but could be EEs. Doesn't really matter to me :)

And just for fun, here's my new EE mutt I picked up over the weekend ;) what you thinkin? I'm considering ameraucana and barred rock or Dominique mixed? Egg color guesses anyone? She hasn't started Layin yet

What color are your Ameraucanas legs. The experts will tell you that it is an EE if it has green legs. That is what I was told because I thought my EE was an Ameraucana. So, what color are they. Love your ee. It's really cute.

I'll bet you are right about the ameraucana and barred rock mix. It has the body from the looks of it like the A's. Same shape as my EE. No rear end like a regular chicken and very little tail. At least that's my opinion of it. Look at my profile pic and you can take a look at Earl the Pearl. That's his name now since he is most likely a cockerel. See what you think.

I need this groups knowledge, you guys would know anything about Ameracauna's. So in May, I get a box of Jersey Giants from a guy who breeds and shows them and in order to fill my box, he put in some white Ameracauna's, which he also shows. They are so great, I never would have thought to get this breed so I am very you glad things worked out. Anyways, my question is that some have slate legs, like the APA Standard of Perfection states they should but some of them are green legged. Is this a genetic thing or did I not get true white Ameracauna's? I really like them but I a have the goal of raising show quality birds. Do I need to cull my green legged ones or is this just part of the genetic puzzle where in a hatch you get some green legs and some slate legs? All of them have pea combs and some have fuller muffs than the others. I have been reading through the posts but nothing answered this question. Thank you for the help.
