This is the recipe I use. But after step 4 I put it in the crock pot then when it is ready I continue on to step 5. I use the whole cockerel, skinned and quartered.

It is fabulous. It lasted my husband and myself 3 meals.

That thing is so easy it makes you lazy. It cooks like a convection oven. Food and hickory chips go inside, charcoal goes outside, so the only thing that flavors the food is the hickory. 2 chickens took an hour and a half, 15 lb turkey is 2 hours, 5 pound Boston Butt in 3 hours.
Oh my gosh! Dinner looks great! Pick us up at the airport! Lol! Looks like a wonderful meal for your family! Merry Christmas SC!!! I am heading for Missouri tomorrow am for a week plus! so excited to spend it with my mom and friends! The hubby, me & our kids celebrated today!!

So my Lav cock is throwing leakage on his black split sons... looking for advice on if I should try to get a non leaky BS cockerel out of him, or just replace him?

Any thoughts?

Yes. It's not your cock. It's your female. If your cock isn't leaking, but his sons are, then the leakage is coming from the hen. Don't breed her anymore.

Editing to add any females you hatched from a cockerel showing leakage, should not be used to breed from either. Females will pass it on even though they don't show it.

Can you elaborate on this? What are the genetics behind the leakage and how is it sex-linked?

I wish I knew. I'm not a genetic expert. I was told this years ago by those that know. I have experienced it myself in my blues and blacks and it took getting rid of the females who threw those males to rid my flock of it and also not using the leaky males. There are melanizers involved in covering "color" and that is a factor also.
I would imagine, if you are going to use a leaky male, that you would cross him with a female you know is carrying some of those extra melanizers and only keep and choose from the grown out males from that cross. You may have success getting a non leaky male that way. I wouldn't keep any females from that cross unless you track them and their offspring carefully to see what they throw. I did have success doing this with a not so perfect blue male crossed to a heavily melanized female. I did produce a beautiful blue male who went on to throw good females.

It's the cock, I didn't see leakage... but his black split sons are showing it...

So if one of his sons doesn't have leakage, he would be ok to use?

This is what I'm trying to find out... I know the pullets can carry it without being visible, just want to know if it's a viable option to breed out... don't have a cock to replace him with... :/
