Self blue/Lavender is recessive, has to have 2 copies to show... is commonly bred with black, but they do breed true if bred together... it is not laced and color should be even through the feather...
The blue in BBS is Andalusian blue... it is dominant and only takes 1 copy to express... 2 copies makes splash... blue only breeds true 50% of the time, thus the blue×blue=50% blue, 25% black and 25% splash... and good blue should be laced...
I rehomed this self blue cockerel and kept my black. The current owner sent an picture to show me how much he has filled out. No regrets but he is pretty.
I am ready! I would probably have mine by now but I guess the wheatens are slow to get back to laying. They have been giving extra light to get them laying.
From 8 hens I'm averaging 5 eggs/day right now. Some days I get 4, but usually 5. I think all are laying now. The size is starting to pick up a little, so if this batch doesn't go well, I have high hopes for the next one
SC, you need to walk over to Mrs. Flock and remind her that with a 28 Egg incubator there's no way you can possibly fill orders for 6 customers & yourself! Let her know YOU will be 4ever indebted to her! Favors, chores, shopping & such! Lol!
She knows it's an investment. She thought it was crazy to spend $360 on an incubator last year, but I paid myself back with the first 2 hatches. I tried Styrofoam first, and that looked like a horrible science experiment, so she understands the value of the Brinsea
I work long hours, and I need something that is essentially set and forget. The Brinsea really is. I have really high hatch rates, and all I do is add water every 3 or 4 days. The 20 is kind of small, but 20-24 chicks is a good number for me to work with. I have the brooders and juvenile pens to handle that many, but 3 weeks between sets is just too long. Another Octagon 20 would be ideal, especially heading into the spring when demand is so high. Chicks sell really strong from March-May, and I can sell pullets year round
Little hootchies just love to hatch eggs. This picture was taken in August. I had 6 hens in May, and had already sold 20 chicks by the time this was taken. One of those dumb birds walked out with 2 more chicks the week before Christmas
You can see from the pictures that the AMs are much better quality than the Silkies
