Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

It will be still some time before I start hatching, so no hurry at this time
That's good because it will be awhile before I get my birds separated into the different breeding groups/pens and wait the required time.

Hi

The wheaten pullet, also shown below, doesn't have willow legs, but the shadow on her back leg may make it look that way on your monitor. If you look at her front leg, it is slate. That pullet is only 8 weeks old in that picture.

Wheatens and blue wheatens have the lightest colors shanks when they are young and they darken as they grow older. Depending on the age at the time the picture was taking, it can range anywhere from the a lighter slate, almost pinkish cast when very young, to the full slate. In my five years of raising wheatens and blue wheatens, I've yet to see one with the really dark shanks of, say, the whites.

Thank you! Good info for when my babies come. How can you tell this early if she is Wheaten or blue Wheaten?

It can be tricky. I've been fooled by some older than her. Spread her wings and look for color there...You may see a pale gray color indicating blue or a black color indicating wheaten. When it's difficult to tell from the tail, the wings are the best place to tell.

Breeding a Lavender Ameraucana to Buff Orp or Black Copper Maran produces what? EE? I have Lav rooster. Thanks.

Yes, you are correct. It would produce an EE. If you mate your Lavender (or self blue) Ameraucana rooster with a black copper maran, you can create what some people call an "olive egger." The females would lay olive green eggs. It just depends on what you are going for, but none of them would be true Ameraucanas. Good luck!

I guess the Wheatens and blue Wheatens are slow to get back to laying! I ended up changing my order and adding come lavenders in place of the Wheaten/blue wheatens! I might still order them next year!

I was actually thinkin about you & wondering when your chicks would come in:jumpy
So u ended up canceling the blue wheatens & trading for lavenders?! Nice!
I was wanting lavenders too, but he didn't offer those for sale. BUT..I love the blue wheatens too! So I hope they get to laying well for my breeder!:cd :jumpy
