Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I only have the two black hens that have a good chance of being split for lavender and one lavender hen. I could put them in with my lavender pen I guess! My two blue hens are culls! The one had good color but lacked beard. The other has good beard but too light. All the rest are roosters! Three blacks, one splash and two lavenders. I like the one big black roo and the lavender roo but think I will want to keep the roos from Paul. I am not good at chosing which to keep! So I keep holding on to them but need to make my mind up on what I am going to do!!!!
Chances are you will get a few exceptional roosters from Paul that will help correct some problems with your hens. I'd scrap all the roosters you have, but keep your hens just to see what they throw

Any time I've bought straight run chicks, I've always bought twice as many as I needed to get as many girls as possible without much thought given to the rooster. With these breeder quality birds it's actually nice to have several roosters to choose from, and the ones I chose not to keep sold quickly
Boy!...I'm sure wishing I would have ordered 20 now! The DH would probably hit the fan..! I hope ordering 5 of 3 different colors will give me a good start. The important thing to me is that their nice quality birds! But I can always get more later. I am really hoping for one NICE black cockerel out of the 5 blacks. Also a good blue wheaten cockerel would be GREAT! And I'm pretty sure he tries to take them out of different pens. . The waiting is KILLING me! Lol! I told my DH who knows? If the weather stays in the upper 40s & 50s maybe the whole bunch will start laying early!

Hmmmm... wonder who gave you that tip... :gig

I need to decided What to do with the Ameraucanas I have! I am collecting hatching eggs for a lady.Just mixed.I Will probably start my whole flock over again!
It does sound like the roos are piling up on you..! Poor girl! What to do what to do...you COULD eat them!! Lol! I am in such admiration for those of you that get in there and butcher your chickens. SC...and that awesome smoker! My Nana in Oklahoma used to butcher chickens that was their main meal I imagine. BUT GUYS...unless the lights go out in America mine will eventually turn into freeloaders I'm sure! Being buried...as pets...unless I get a mean one! I envision myself swing an ax around wildly begging it to hold still! Lol! ....while the neighbors look on....yes! Absolutely lovely vision! PRICELESS the DH would say!Lol!l

Good advice.  Each year a customer will say they want fewer than 25 chicks and won't know what to do with the extras.  Best Farm Buys, Craig's List and other sites are helpful.

I've been wanting to get an order from you, still working on getting my OH to agree, lol... but I was curious about your Silvers? I love them, but not many have info on them... are they comparable to the other varieties in lay rate, temperament and all? Any major differences with them? Just wondering why they aren't more popular...

You gotta get a plan for the roosters. Sell them, give them away, or eat them. There's always too many

Well thats what the DH is for!!! Tell him! Be a man! Like in the old days! Big Strong Provider Man! lol You don't think I am going to butcher them do you! I did once! When my husband was at work. A dog got in our pen and killed most of them.I had to put the injured ones down! I cried the whole time!
