Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

There is at least one big commercial hatchery that claims to have "blue Ameraucana" and the way I read their site they are asking $16.96 for straight run day-old chicks. I don't know of any breeders that would charge that much though.
It does make a difference if shipping is included and it can cost up to around $45 to ship a box of 25 chicks using Priority Express Mail, depending on distance.
Once you buy the birds it costs the same to feed and house a cheap one as is it does an expensive one.
I do believe "purebred" for all the Standard traits is nearly impossible to achieve and that is why I prefer "standard bred".

Interesting to know that quality breeders are charging FAR less for an Ameraucana chick than a hatchery is charging. Being a noob chicken owner, I would have ASSUMED it to be the opposite. And no, the $16.96 SR ($20 F, $14 M) from the commercial hatchery does NOT include shipping, though their shipping costs are far less than $10/chick. For example (random test) it would cost $42 for 8 female Blue Ameraucana chicks shipped to my PO. They don't sell more than 8 in an order. Thus 8 from a breeder at $10 (the high end?) and $80 shipping would be less than from this hatchery. Though I do not know how much more the breeder would charge per chick to ship 8.

I very much appreciate the long time breeders whose famous names are shown in "I have xxx's line" posts assisting on BYC, a place primarily directed to 'pet' chicken owners but with a contingent of more serious chicken keepers.

What I paid from a breeder was $10 per chick and that included the price of shipping! So if you ordered 25 chicks the price would be a flat $250.00 shipped to you! I "think" they had a min. order of 10! If you ordered less then 25 chicks the price per chick was higher.

Hatcheries are a business... breeders are usually in it for the advancement and continuation of the breed...

I have ordered from hatcheries in the past but now that I see the differences in quality. I will never go back!

I do agree, but since I consider my 12' by 16' room with incubators a hatchery I will generally refer to the big ones as commercial hatcheries...in business to make money. I do business with a few commercial hatcheries and have even sold Ameraucana chicks to one so they could cross them with their Easter Eggers to improve egg color.
Over the past 30+ years I've called my little operation Blehm Hatchery, Birch Run Hatchery, Chick Hatchery and now Fowl Stuff Hatchery. I just don't want readers to somehow get the impression every hatchery is the same. I fall into your breeder category and am happy to break even on my chicken habit.
From my site I put it this way. http://fowlstuff.com/FFAQ.html#four

I stand corrected... or maybe elaborated upon? :)
