Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Just a question from an unlearned rookie. Are there any ethical issues when bringing in other breed's blood into another? I've have a little background in dog breeding and that would be a definite AKC disqualification.

That was a tough one for me, too, when I first started out with chickens. One of the big differences is that a dog breed, once recognized by its registering agency (AKC) has a stud book that is then closed and no more cross breeding is allowed.

Since we don't track, or register, chicken pedigrees, the "stud book", or gene pool, remains open.

The ethics are on a more individual scale. If someone is selling blacks that are lavender splits, for example, it would be ethical to share that information so there buyer doesn't have unexpected surprises down the road.

Sadly, not everyone shares that mindset.

Lol. Oh dear. Well, if you insist.

I took a quad of blacks to the Sandlappers poultry Breeders Association show today.
This hen, from Paul Smith, took CH AOSB in the first show.

This hen, from Clif Redden, took CH AOSB in the second show.

And my cockbird, also from Clif, took Reserve Breed, in the first show.

That breeding pen, with 4 birds, has one CH LF, one Reserve CH LF, six CH AOSB, two Reserve CH AOSB, one district CH Ameraucana, six best of breeds, two Reserve best of breeds. This is from three double shows since last October.

I can't wait to see the chicks from that pen!

(Is that better, @scflock ) lol

Just as every breed of dog had to be originally created/developed from dogs that weren't of that breed...because it didn't exist, breeds and varieties of chickens have to be created from other chickens.
Read the background of the Chantecler for a list of all the breeds used to create them, just to give you idea how one breed came about.
Once you have a breed and you want to develop more colors (varieties) crossbreeding is often the only way to introduce the desired genes.  Think of all the breeds in recent years that now have a lavender variety, understanding crossbreeding was needed with each to bring in the recessive lavender gene.

.
A lot has been done without AKC documentation . Parentage falsified ect. Harder to do with DNA profiling . I can see Pomeranian in long haired Chiahuahua . Dachshund  have long hair and dapple . Looks like blue merle collie or blue heeler was added . If you got caught then yes they would ban you . Newer registries  have come along to take care of these newly developed colors or breeds . The UKC was created to get coonhounds registered . Way back the AKC would not touch them . The CKC and others have come into existence .

Thanks for the answers! Your responses in total answered all my questions. I doubt I would ever have the patience, despite my good ideas, to breed in desired traits and then possibly have to breed out the unwanted ones with cross breeding. But, I can see myself wanting, say an AM that was true to the SOP, showing locally, and breeding to enhance my stock. So, from what you guys are telling me I should really trust who I buy my chicks from.
