Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Ravyn You can slap me now!!!! If you don't! I know scflock will! :gig

Heck no, I won't!! And neither will SC!! It's not easy to learn from short text posts... visuals help a lot...

I was just staying out of it cuz I didn't want to confuse you more! :)

Exactly!!! :thumbsup

Is great to have such knowledgeable and patient people taking the time to help others too!!

So, that's what happened to me! Momma kept talking about that red-headed milkman....

(I'm just kidding, folks LOL - My mother would roll over in her grave if she heard me)
I dodged that one . I had a red headed great grandfather . Mom apparently did not inherit that gene . Her brother on the other hand had a red headed grandson .

Yep just like those little red headed kids that pop up in a family . Everyone is like now where did that come from . Parents carried that recessive gene .

I have two of those red headed kids and two white chick that have two copies of recessive white genes! I think I got that right! lol

My husband's a red head, I'm a brunette. Our children (both of them) came out looking like the indian baby off of Ice Age, and now they're blonde... go figure.

All the more reason for me to not add to your confusion, lol!

Seriously, Jerry and Susan are mega leagues above me... one day I hope to have a 10th of their knowledge... ;)

Ok, sometimes seeing things visually makes it easier to understand, so bear with me and my little illustrations. :)

Let's take a black rooster, that is carrying the hidden recessive white. He's only carrying one copy of it, because if he was carrying two - he'd be white.

And we have a hen that is the same - black with a single copy of the recessive white. We put those two together and this is what we get:

Now, let's say I take one of those white chicks who just happens to be a pullet and breed her back to that rooster - her Dad, so to speak. This is what will happen.

Every chick in this breeding will have at least one copy of the recessive gene, because the mother has two and it's the only thing she can donate to the next generation. Some chicks will also inherit a copy of the recessive gene from the Dad, but he has both recessive and dominant, so he could pass on either one. Statistics say that it should be 50/50, but you have to have a looooooooot of chicks to match the statistics. The reality is that it is a crap shoot which one he gives with each egg that is fertilized.

Clearer now?

By the way - the above charts will work for any recessive trait - not just recessive white.

Well, thank you for that, but Jerry is light years ahead of me. Remember - he was one of the founding breeders for the Ameraucanas! I was still riding around horse shows and hoping my saddle didn't slip when he started with these birds!
